Enabling/Disabling Activities

By default, all activities are enabled at all levels in the CommCell. An activity that is enabled at the CommCell level, can still be disabled at lower levels. But when disabling activities, the CommCell level has the highest precedence while a subclient has the lowest precedence. If you disable an activity at the CommCell level, then that activity is disabled throughout the CommCell regardless of the corresponding settings of the individual entities.

You can enable/disable activities at any point in time using the following steps:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the entity and select Properties.
  2. Click the Activity Control tab.
  3. Select or clear check boxes to enable or disable activities.
  4. Click OK.

The following activities can be performed at different levels in the CommServe:

Level Activities Capability

  • scheduling activities
  • offline content indexing activities

Preventing Job History for Disabled Activities

You can add the JMDontStartBkpsOnDisabledAgents additional setting to prevent job history from being created for disabled activities. Without this additional setting, job history is created for disabled activities even though the job does not run.

Example: The Enable Backup check box on the Activity Control tab is cleared at the client level. If the JMDontStartBkpsOnDisabledAgents additional setting is enabled, a "Failed to Start" job does not appear in the job history for the client after the backup job runs.

Note: The JMDontStartBkpsOnDisabledAgents additional setting applies to scheduled jobs.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click CommServe and then click Properties.
  2. In the CommCell Properties dialog box, click the Additional Settings tab and then click Add.
  3. In the Add Additional Settings dialog box, enter the details for the additional setting:
    1. In the Name box, type JMDontStartBkpsOnDisabledAgents.
    2. In Category box, select CommservDB.GxGlobalParam.
    3. In the Type box, select INTEGER.
    4. In Value box, select 1 to enable the additional setting.
    5. Click OK.
  4. In the CommCell Properties dialog box, click OK.

Re-Enabling Activities After a Specific Time Interval

If an activity is disabled at any level of the CommCell hierarchy, it can be re-enabled by specifying the date and time at which the activity will start on the specified level. You can pre-determine the date and time when activities will begin on the CommCell, client computer group, client computer, or agent.

If you disable an activity at the CommCell level, then that activity is disabled throughout the CommCell regardless of the corresponding settings of the individual client computer groups, client computers, agents, and subclients. However running and waiting activities will run to completion, but stopped and pending activities cannot resume until the activity is enabled.

The section below provides the steps to enable all job activities at the CommCell level after a time interval as an example:

  1. In the CommCell Browser, right-click the CommServe and click Properties.

The CommCell Properties dialog box appears.

  2. Click the Activity Control tab.
  3. Clear the Enable All Job Activity check box and click Enable after a Delay.

The Enable All Job Activity dialog box appears.

  4. Select the Automatically Enable at the following time check box.
  5. Specify the Time Zone and Date to re-enable all job activity.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK in the CommCell Properties dialog box to re-enable all job activity after the specified delay.

Queuing Jobs for Disabled Activities

When an activity is disabled, you can queue all the jobs for the disabled activity using the following steps. These jobs will remain in the Job Controller in a queued state until the activities is re-enabled.

Use the following steps to queue jobs if activity control for the job types is disabled:

  1. From the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In the System section, click Job Management.

The Job Management dialog box appears.

  4. Click OK.

CommCell Browser Icons for Activity Control

The icons associated with the CommServe, Clients and Agents entities in the CommCell Browser include information on the activity control status for backup and restore activities. When one of these activities is disabled, a red directional arrow overlays the entity icon as follows:

  • The out-bound arrow () indicates that backup activities are disabled.
  • The in-coming arrow () indicates that restore activities are disabled

When both backup and restore activities are disabled, an 'x' on the right-corner () overlays the entity icon. For example, if a Windows client has both backup and restore activities disabled, the icon will look like this: .
