Are there any Browse options that can be set globally?

Certain options for Browse and Recovery operations can be set globally. Once sent, these options will be available for all browse and recovery operations. You can set them from the Control Panel by enabling one of the following options from Browse/Search/Recovery Options:

  • Show Aged Data during Browse and Recovery

    When enabled, aged data will be included as part of the results of the operation. For more information, see Accessing Aged Data

  • Disable Confirmation Message for Restore Jobs

    When enabled, confirmation messages will no longer be displayed for restore jobs.

  • Automatically Switch Copy to Read Data from any Copy

    When enabled, copy precedence automatically changes if the primary copy is unreachable.

Why don't I see file versions for files with hard links?

View versions for files having hard links as their content is not supported.

What items are included in Folder Size of the browsed data?

Folder sizes display accurate values when a point in time browse is performed. If you have duplicate Items across subclients, they are counted multiple times, however the restore is optimized to restore only one copy. Deleted items are not considered in folder sizes of browse results.

Why do Job Results folder from older version clients appear in my Browse Results?

Job results folders backed by version 9 clients are carried forward by Synthetic full jobs after an upgrade. This is because in version 10, deleted files are carried forward until retention criteria is met.

For existing subclients this retention period is set to Delete Immediately. So file system subclients do not carry forward these files in the first synthetic full backup. However, subclients enabled for archiving have the default setting as 730 days, so job results folders are carried forward.

How are filters applied to file names and folders?

Filters for folder level property are applied first. Once a folder is shown for browse other filters for file level properties will be applied. However, you can specify only one item in each filter you select, multiple items in a single filter (with use of operators) will not be honored.

Can I use any MediaAgent while browsing using filters?

Filtered browse is supported with MediaAgent of versions 10.0 and above. If a MediaAgent from a previous version of the software is used, all browse data would be shown and no filters will be applied to the browse results.

Can I use wildcards to specify a pattern of file names in the browse filters?

Yes, you can use wildcards in file names while specifying browse filters.

However, if file names or folder names have wild card characters as part of their name and the same are being used in the file name filter while browsing, it will not yield desired results.

How can I know if one or more index is not available?

A caution icon is displayed at the root level when one or more index is not available at the time of browse.

Why do I see folders when I only specified file name filters?

Matching folder names will also get displayed when file name filters are specified as it will display everything matching the specified name.

How do I optimize my browse?

The performance of filtered browse operations may be slow while drilling down multiple folders. To get faster results, make sure to enter the path of the data in the Specify Browse Path in the browse window.

How do I distinguish the deleted files in my browse results?

Deleted files appear with a cross icon in the Browse results.

Why do not I see the file size of failed files?

File size is not recorded for failed files, hence if you specify both Failed Files and File Size filters together, it may yield unexpected results.

Why do not I see deleted files when I browse using the modified date filter?

If a file was deleted in between backups, the deleted version of the file is not considered in modified date filter results. Hence, the file will not show up in the browse results.

Why do I see folders when I browsed using file size filter?

Folders matching the size criteria gets displayed when File Size filter is used for Clients and MediaAgents running in version 8 of the software. It is recommended to have clients and MediaAgents in the same version as the CommServe to view accurate results for the filters.

Why don't I see all file versions when using View All Versions after a browse operation?

In case any attributes other than file size and modified date are changed, view all versions may not display the items. This is because same data would have been backed up by the respective backups and could be restored by browse and restore operation.

How does the End-User capability affect browsing agent data?

For Windows® File System and Exchange iDataAgents, the End-User capability restricts browsing to the user's agent data. However, for agents that do not support browsing, users with End-User capability can browse all of the agent data.
