Clustered File System Storage

Disk libraries are supported on clustered file systems such as Global File Systems (GFS), Cluster File Systems (CFS), IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS), and Polyserve File System.

Low Cost Long Term Storage or Cold Storage

SnapProtect supports data backups on high capacity, low cost, and long term storage disk devices, also known as the cold storage devices. These cold storage devices are beneficial for storing dormant data which is not necessarily accessed regularly by organizations but might still be of use.

For example: Spectra Logic Verde DPE (Digital Preservation for Enterprise). You can use Spectra Logic Verde DPE as a disk target and set up long term retention for extended time period.

Create a Disk Library Shared Between Multiple MediaAgents

Use the following steps to configure disk library using multiple MediaAgents.

  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. In the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents whose devices you want to detect or display.

    Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list, and then click OK.

  3. Click OK.
  4. On the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box that appears, click Start, point to Add, and then click Disk Library.
  5. In the Alias box, specify name of the disk library, and then click OK.
  6. In the Disk Device list, select Add new device.
  7. In the Base Folder box, specify the name of the folder where the library must be created.
  8. From the MediaAgent list, select the MediaAgent.
  9. From the Sharing Folder Properties, do one of the following:
    • If the mount path is on a local drive, select Local Path, and then enter the file path to the mount path In the Folder box.
    • If the mount path is on a network drive, select Network Path, and then do the following:
      • In the Connect As box, type the user name.
      • In the Password and Verify Password box, type the password to access the network share.
      • In the Folder box, enter the file path to the mount path.
  10. Click OK.

    The disk library appears in the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box with a status of configured.

  11. Close the dialog box.

Configure a Disk Library with Automated Mount Path Detection

Automated disk library is a process to configure new mount paths automatically when a new LUN is mounted under a given folder as the Mount point. Automated disk library is supported for all Windows MediaAgents.

Automated disk library is useful when:

  • multiple disk devices need to be detected and automatically assigned as a mount path to the library.
  • storage is in Building Block and needs to be shared across MediaAgents.
  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. In the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents whose devices you want to detect or display.

    A message appears that tells you to configure the storage devices on the new MediaAgents.

  3. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Start menu, select Add, and then click Disk Library with Automated Mount Path Detection.

    The Add Disk Library dialog box appears.

  6. In the Alias box, type name of the disk library, and then click OK.
  7. From the MediaAgent list, select the MediaAgent.
  8. In the Folder box, enter the file path to the mount path
  9. Click OK.
  10. If you want to configure a mount path for all of the selected MediaAgents, do the following:
    1. Select Configure for all other selected Windows MediaAgents check box.
    2. In the Connect As box, specify the user account information.
    3. In the Password box, specify the password to access the mount path.
    4. In the Verify Password, retype the password.
    5. In the Folder box, enter the file path to the mount path.
    6. Select Read Only check box, to give read only permission to the mount path.
  11. Click OK.

    The mount path is added to the specified location.

    When you add a mount path, the disk library appears in the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box with a status of configured.

  12. Expand library to see the devices that are added to the mount path.
  13. If you configured multiple MediaAgent for the mount path, then you can see which MediaAgents are shared for the mount paths:
    1. Click Shared Disk Device tab.
    2. Expand the .

      The MediaAgents that are associated with the device appear.

Configure Multiple MediaAgents for a Shared Disk Device

Before you Begin

  • For Windows, configure multiple MediaAgents if the mount path of the device is UNC path.
  • For Unix, the mount path should be unique
  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. From the Select MediaAgents dialog box, perform the following:
    1. From the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents of same operating system type.
    2. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list box, and then click OK.
  3. Click OK.
  4. From the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  5. Expand the Device to which you want to configure multiple MediaAgents.
  6. Right-click the <Mount Path> and then click Configure for All Selected MediaAgents.

    • For Windows, configure all MediaAgents when the mount path is configured as UNC path and all selected MediaAgents have access to this UNC path.
    • For Unix, ensure that the directory path to be mounted in the MediaAgent, which has not been configured has the same directory path as that of the configured MediaAgent.

  7. Click Yes.

    The device is configured with the list of selected MediaAgents.

Modify the Library Name and Description

You can modify the name of disk library and also add relevant information about the library as a description.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Library Name box, type the name.
  4. In the Description box, add relevant information about the library.
  5. Click OK.

View the MediaAgent and the Number of Mount Paths

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.

    The name of the MediaAgent that controls the library and the number of mount paths that are defined for the library are displayed on the General tab of the Library Properties dialog box.

  3. Click OK.

Changing the Status of the Disk Library

The status of the disk library indicates whether the library is Ready (online) or Offline. If the status is Offline, the reason is displayed.

If you change the status of the disk library to Offline, the library cannot be accessed by the system.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.

    The Library Properties dialog box appears. The Status field indicate whether the library is Ready or Offline. If the disk library is offline, the reason for the offline status is displayed in the Offline Reason box.

  3. To change the status to Ready, select the Enable Library check box.
  4. To change the status to Offline, clear the Enable Library check box.
  5. Click OK.

Configure Files as Read-Only

You can configure the library to create archive/backup files as read-only files on filers. This enables the corresponding read-only lock mechanism on the destination filers and saves the archive/backup files as read-only files. The expiration date for the read-only lock is set to match the data retention time (backup or archiver retention days, whichever is higher) established in the storage policy copies. These files cannot be modified or deleted by any user or application until the specified retention date. Once the retention expires, the system deletes the files as a part of Data Aging.

This feature is supported on the following filers:

  • Data Domain (Archive Locks)
  • EMC Celerra (File Level Retention)
  • HDS HCP (Atime Retention)
  • NetApp (SnapLock)
  • Permabit (WORM Retention)
  • HP StorageWorks X9000 6.0 Network Storage Systems
  • Fujitsu ETERNUS CS High End
  • HYDRAstor

This option affects only the files that are subsequently created by data protection and auxiliary copy operations to this library. Permission to files that are already available in this library are not affected.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources > Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the Mark Archive files as Read-Only check box.
  4. Click OK.

Modify the Low Watermark

You can establish a low watermark for each disk library. The low watermark is the minimum amount of free space at which the low watermark warning should be generated. If the amount of free space, for all the combined mount paths, reaches or falls below the low watermark, the system logs a message in the Event Viewer and generates the Insufficient Storage Alert, if configured.

The Insufficient Storage alert is generated based on the following calculation:

When the total free disk space of all mount paths is less than or equal to the low water mark percentage + (plus) the total reserve space.

Example of a Single Mount Path:

The alert is generated based on the following:

MP1: Total disk space is 100GB

Total reserve space is 20GB

Low water mark percentage is 10% of the total disk space.

Therefore, 10% of the total disk space is: (100X10)/100=10GB

10GB (10% of the total disk space) + 20GB (total reserve space) = 30GB

The alert is generated when 30GB space is left on the disk.

Example of Multiple Mount Paths

The alert is generated based on the following:

MP1: Total disk space is 100GB

Reserve space is 20GB

MP2: Total disk space is 300GB

Reserve space is 30GB

Low water mark percentage is 20% of the total disk space.

Therefore, 20% of the total disk space is: (100+300) X 20/100=80GB

Total reserve space is: 20GB + 30GB = 50GB

80GB (20% of the total disk space) + 50GB (total reserve space) = 130GB

The alert is generated when 130GB space is left on the disk.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.

    The Library Properties dialog box appears. The Space Status field indicates the amount of space that is occupied on the disk.

    The Space Status is updated every 30 minutes based on the Interval (Minutes) between disk space updates parameter set in the Media Management Configuration dialog box.

  3. In the Low Watermark box, enter the minimum percentage of free space at which the low watermark warning should be generated.
  4. In the Warning Watermark box, enter the percentage of free space at which a warning must be generated.
  5. Click OK.

Configure a Low Disk Space Alert

By default, low disk space alert is based on the low watermark level. However, if you set the Number of days in advance to trigger alert for low disk space for disk library option to a value greater than 0, you receive a low disk space alert when the disk library is about to run out of space (measured in days).

You can calculate the low disk space to set the Number of days in advance to trigger alert for low disk space for disk library option by applying the following formula:

(Free Disk space – Reserve space)/(Average amount of data backed up over the last 30 days) = Number of days when the library will be full

Example:

The total disk space is 100GB.

Reserve space is 20GB.

Low water mark is set at 10%.

Average unit of data backed up in last 30 days is 10GB per day.

(100GB-20GB)/10 GB = Number of days when the library will be full.

80/10 = 8 days before all the free disk space is consumed.

If you want to be alerted 2 days in advance about the low disk space, then set the Number of days in advance to trigger alert for low disk space for disk library value to 2 days.

The following warning message is generated when only 20GB of free disk space is available.

Failure Reason: At the current usage rate of 10GB per day, library <library_name > with free space 20GB will run out of space in 2 days.

If you configure a low disk space alert, you do not receive notifications for low watermark or warning watermark.

To configure the low disk space alert based on number of days, you must set the Number of days in advance to trigger alert for low disk space for disk library option, and then configure the alert notification.

Configuring the Low Disk Space Alert Option

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Media Management.

    The Media Management Configuration dialog box appears.

  2. On the Service Configuration tab, set the Number of days in advance to trigger alert for low disk space for disk library option to a value greater than 0.

    This value is the number of days that you want to be notified before the library runs out of disk space. For example, if you want to be notified five days before the library runs out of disk space, set the value to 5.

    If the value is set to 0, then the alert is generated when the low watermark is reached.

  3. Click OK.

Configuring the Low Disk Space Alert Notification

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Home tab, and then click Alert.

    The Alerts dialog box appears.

  2. Click Add.

    The Add Alerts Wizard appears.

  3. Configure the alert according to your needs. As you configure the alert, make sure that the following options are set:
    • On the General Information page, set Category = Media Management and Type = Library Management.
    • On the Threshold and Notification Criteria Selection page, select the Insufficient Storage check box.
  4. Once you configure the alert completely, click Finish.
  5. Click OK.

Configure Disk Volume Size

Disk volumes are created based on the volume size. When the size of the volume reaches the maximum size, then a new volume is created. The maximum size of a disk volume is set to 25 GB by default, and this value can be modified.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Media Management.
  2. Click the Resource Manager Configuration tab.
  3. Modify the Disk volume physical size high watermark in GB parameter as required.
  4. From the Disk volume physical size high watermark in GB box, enter the disk volume size.
  5. Click OK.

Configure Timeouts

The timeout parameter determines how long a job waits for a status response after an operation is requested. If the job does not receive a success or failure status within the timeout period, the job is terminated and a failure message is displayed. You can set the following timeout periods:

  • Mount - The number of minutes used to mount the disk library for read/write operations.
  • Unmount - The number of minutes used to unmount the disk library after a read/write operation.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Mount and Unmount box, enter the timeout periods.
  4. Click OK.

Enable Support for Single Instancing of Data (Content Address Storage)

For appliances that support hardware single instancing of data (for example, Centera) you can enable the option to write the data in a single instancing format.

*Metadata includes Access Control Lists (ACLs) and any additional streams associated with the files.

The following operations are not supported:

  • Data Multiplexing to a deduplicated library.
  • Auxiliary copy (including Inline Copy) of multiplexed data to a deduplicated library.

    Once you have valid data in the library, you will not be able to change the deduplication status for the library, whether the option is enabled or not.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Policies | Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Mount Paths tab.

    Mount paths that are enabled with hardware single instancing must be less than 100 characters long.

  4. Click the Disks within this library support Hardware Single Instancing check box.

    A message appears that tells you that once there is valid data associated with the selected library, you will not be able to select or clear this option.

    When this option is selected, the underlying storage is able to do single instancing on files, where the same file content is written multiple times. The data is not written in a container format, where multiple files are combined together into a chunk.

    This option is not applicable for SnapProtect's Deduplication.

  5. Click Yes and click OK.

Prevent Accidentally Deleting the Contents of a Mount Path

You can protect your mount path contents from being deleted accidentally from outside of the CommCell Console. Contents on mount paths that are created when this option is selected are protected from accidental deletion. This option is selected by default. This option applies to mount paths that are created on NTFS volumes. This option is not supported for libraries that are attached to BlueArc NAS NDMP file servers, Hitachi HNAS storage array, and Data Domain storage systems.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Mount Paths tab.
  4. Do either of the following:
    • To protect the contents, select the Prevent accidental deletion of data from mountpaths check box.
    • To leave the contents unprotected, clear the Prevent accidental deletion of data from mountpaths check box.
  5. Click OK.

Establish the Parameters for Mount Path Usage

These parameters can be used to specify how the system must perform write operations on disk libraries that have multiple mount paths. Two parameters for mount path usage can be configured. They are:

  • Fill and Spill Mount Paths

    If this option is selected the system completely fills the disk space (based on the space allocation established for the individual mount paths) before writing to another mount path. Use this option when you want the data to be consolidated, without any fragmentation.

    The system will use the mount path in the order in which the mount path was added to the library. For example, a disk library has 3 mount paths (A, B, C) configured. All the jobs will be directed to mount path A as it was created first. Mount paths B and C will be used for additional writers in the order in which they were added to the disk library. Note that as long as a active volume exists in any of the mount paths, the consecutive backups will continue to use that mount path.

  • Spill and Fill Mount Paths

    If this option is selected the system writes to all the mount paths in parallel if you have established sufficient number of writers. Use this option to obtain maximum throughput, especially when you have several mount paths. However the data will be fragmented between the available mount paths.

    Note that when this option is selected, the system will use the Least Recently Used (LRU) mount path. (As opposed to the mount path with least used capacity.) 

    For example, a disk library with 3 mount paths (A, B, C) and if two 3-stream storage policies (SP_1_1, 2 and 3 and SP_2_1, 2 and 3) are used for running simultaneous backups, the jobs are run as follows: (Assuming that the backups are run for the first time.)

    SP_1_1 > Mount Path A
    SP_2_1 > Mount Path B
    SP_1_2 > Mount Path C
    SP_2_2 > Mount Path A
    SP_1_3 > Mount Path B
    SP_2_3 > Mount Path C

    Note that this order may change subsequently, depending on the LRU condition of the mount path.

To illustrate the usage of the above mentioned options, consider the following example:

Assume that a disk library that allows multiple writes is configured with two mount paths. Start two jobs - the jobs may either be run concurrently, or individually, one after another. If the Fill and Spill mount paths option is selected, both jobs will use the first mount path. If the Spill and Fill mount paths option is selected, the first job will use the first mount path and the second will use the second mount path.

Note that data protection operations will continue with an available mount path if a required mount path is not available, thereby taking precedence over the option specified for mount path usage. For example, assume that that there are two mount paths, with the Spill and Fill mount path option selected. If one of the mount paths is not available, all data protection operations will use the available mount path.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Mount Paths tab.
  4. Select either Fill and spill mount paths or Spill and fill mount paths.
  5. Click OK.

Thresholds for Managed Disk Space

Disks can be used to spool data prior to being permanently stored on tape for long term/offsite storage. Defining managed disk space thresholds allows you to retain your disk data longer by pruning data according to disk capacity and existing retention criteria. You can define two-disk capacity thresholds for managed disk space:

  • A threshold (in percentage) for starting the data aging operation (upper limit)
  • A threshold (in percentage) for stopping the data aging (lower limit)

When disk capacity reaches a high threshold (for example, 85%), any data exceeding its retention criteria is qualified for aging. When disk capacity reaches the low threshold (for example, 70%), the aging process automatically stops. Once the managed disk is set up the process runs automatically without user intervention to manage disk capacity. Data protection operations are retained on disk longer than usual providing the benefits of disk storage without having to spend manual efforts to manage the disk capacity.

Managed disk space for disk library prunes the data once the threshold capacity is reached. If the data needs to be preserved for longer period of time, then use Extended Retention Rules settings on the Storage Policy Copy. See Extended Retention Rules for more information.

Enable Managed Disk Space for Disk Data

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Policies | Storage Policies.
  2. Right-click the appropriate storage policy copy, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Retention tab.
  4. Select the Enable Managed Disk Space for Disk Library check box.

    If a non-deduplicated storage policy is created with valid retention criteria other than infinite retention, then this option is automatically enabled in the copies.

  5. Click OK.

Specify Predefined Thresholds for Disk Capacity

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Mount Paths tab.
  4. Set the start and stop data aging disk capacity thresholds in the Start aging when data occupied on disk is n % and the Stop aging when data occupied on disk is n % boxes.
  5. Click OK.

Set the Frequency for Checking the Disk Space and Deleting Data

Data Aging determines the pruning based on jobs. Jobs with older data (based on the creation time of its first archive file) are pruned first. Once the Data Aging operation determines the jobs to be pruned, data is deleted based on the established threshold. See Data Aging for more information.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Media Management.
  2. If necessary, click the Service Configuration tab.
  3. For Interval (Minutes) between disk space updates, enter how often disk space is checked.

    By default, the value is set to 30 minutes.

  4. Click OK.

Establish the Mount Path Allocation Policy for the Library

The maximum number of writers for a disk library is used to determine the maximum number of simultaneous data protection operations. Hence this value is linked to the maximum number of data streams that can be established for a storage policy accessing the disk library.

Storage Policy data streams are logical channels that connect client data to the media in which data secured by data protection operations are stored. Multiple data streams can be used to parallelize an operation, in order to improve the rate at which data can be written to the media. The practical limits for establishing data streams in a storage policy accessing a disk library is determined by the minimum value established in either the disk library or the sum of mount paths in the disk library.

Use the following steps to establish the Mount Path Allocation Policy for a disk library:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Mount Paths tab.
  4. Select either Maximum Allowed Writers or Allocate No. of Writers, and then select the maximum number of writers.
  5. Click OK to save the information.

View the Storage Policy and Storage Policy Copies That Access the Disk Library

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Associations tab.

    All of the Storage Policies and the Storage Policy Copies accessing the disk library appear.

  4. Click OK.

Configure Security

Security allows you to associate the disk library with one or more CommCell user groups. See User Administration and Security for more information about user security.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Associate the disk library with or disassociate the disk library from a user group.
  5. Click OK.

View Disk Usage

The Disk Usage report provides the following information:

  • Total capacity available in the library.
  • Disk Space savings using deduplication.
  • Amount of space consumed and freed from the library over a period of time.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Disk Usage tab.

    The disk usage report appears in the tab.

    If the mount path of the disk library contains data (files or folders) other than the backed up data or you have created another disk library using the same mount path location, the Disk Space Utilization might appear as Other Data in the chart.

Fragmentation Analysis

Fragmentation levels in the disk mount paths can be analyzed using the Disk Library Maintenance job. The files in the selected mount paths are analyzed and the fragmentation statistics are reported in the Library and Drive Report. Based on the file fragmentation statistics reported, use the appropriate tools to defragment the disk library.

Notes:

  • SnapProtect recommends defragmenting disk library volumes when needed to ensure performance. SnapProtect does not support calls on any Third-party defragmentation tools. However, Disk keeper has certified its 2011 (and higher) release version for online volume defragmentation.
  • Ensure that no backups are running to the disk library on which you want to run defragmentation and follow the defragmentation procedures specified by Windows.
  • This feature is supported only on Windows MediaAgents. This feature is not supported on Centera Clusters.

Before you analyze the fragmentation levels, set the appropriate fragmentation margin using the following parameters in the Media Management Configuration (Service Configuration) tab:

  • Per File Fragmentation Threshold - Specify the number of fragments per file fragmentation limit per file beyond which the file is considered fragmented. The default value is 10.
  • Mount Path Fragmentation Threshold Percentage - Specify the fragmentation threshold percentage for the mount path. If the threshold exceeds this percentage, then the Library Management Maintenance Required alert, if configured, is triggered. The default value is 100.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Disk Library Maintenance.
  3. From the Disk Library Maintenance dialog box, click the Analysis check box beside the appropriate mount paths.
  4. Do either of the following:
    • To run the maintenance job immediately, click OK.
    • To schedule the job, click the Job Initiation tab.

      Click the Schedule option and select the necessary scheduling option and then click OK to save the schedule.

    The results of the job can be viewed from the Disk Library Maintenance Job Summary Report.

How is Disk Fragmentation Calculated for Disk Libraries?

For all files in a mount path, NetApp uses the following formula to determine the fragmentation percentage:

(Total number of excess fragmentation/Total number of allowed fragmentation) * 100

The Per File Fragmentation Threshold configuration parameter available in Media Management Configuration (Service Configuration) tab sets the number of allowed fragments per file. The default value is 10. This means that within the 2GB chunks of a mount path, if the number of fragments is greater than 10 (for example, n, where n>10), then the file is considered to be a fragment and the excess fragment (n-10) is counted.

The following is an example of a mount path with five chunks (assuming a block size of 4096K as block content, below a value of 4096 will have no fragments).

The mount path in the table shows excess fragmentation = 63 (43 + 4 + 16)

Total number of files = 11

Allowed fragmentation = (total number of files * per-file fragmentation threshold) = 11 * 10 = 110

Total fragmentation percentage = (Total excess fragmentation / Total allowed fragmentation) * 100

                                              = (63 /110) * 100 = 58%

You can increase or decrease per-file fragmentation threshold to control the fragmentation percentage watermark.

Modify the Access Information for a Disk

You might need to change the access information, such as access credentials and/or path on a shared disk. For example if the access credentials are changed in the operating system, you can set the new credentials from the CommCell Console for the disk library.

For Windows devices, you can modify the access information from the device level, which will change access information for all the MediaAgents that share the device.

For Unix MediaAgents, this must be performed from each folder level, which will change the access credentials for each of the specific MediaAgents that access the device.

Modify the Access Path for all MediaAgents Sharing the Device (Supported for Windows MediaAgents)

  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. In the Select MediaAgents dialog box, perform the following:
    1. From the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents.
    2. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list box.
    3. Click OK.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  5. Right-click the appropriate device, and then click Set Network Access Info for all Windows MediaAgents.
  6. Make the necessary changes in the Sharing Folder Properties dialog box.
  7. Click OK.

Modify the Access Path for the Individual MediaAgents

  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. From the Select MediaAgents dialog box, perform the following:
    1. From the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents.
    2. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list box.
    3. Click OK.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  5. Locate the appropriate device, and then expand to the individual folder.
  6. Right-click the Folder, and then click Properties.
  7. Make the necessary changes in the Sharing Folder Properties dialog box.
  8. Click OK
  9. Repeat the procedure for all the folders (MediaAgents) that share the device.

Migrate Disk Libraries

Non-Shared Disk Libraries

If you create non-shared disk libraries, and then upgrade the software on the CommServe computer and the MediaAgent, you must do the following before you migrate the disk library to a new MediaAgent.

  • Change the source MediaAgent name to the target MediaAgent name in the CommServe database.
  • Change the data paths that are configured on the Storage Policies.
  1. Before you migrate the disk library, make sure that the target MediaAgent has access to the same mount path as the source MediaAgent.
  2. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  3. Right-click the disk library that you want to migrate to another MediaAgent, and then click Migrate Disk Library.

    A message appears that tells you that this operation migrates the disk library to another MediaAgent.

  4. Click OK.

    The Select MediaAgent dialog box appears. This dialog box displays the current MediaAgent that the disk library is associated with and allows you to select a MediaAgent to migrate to.

  5. From the list, select the target MediaAgent that you want to migrate to, and then click OK.

    The disk library is now associated with the selected MediaAgent.

  6. Make sure that the mount path that is associated with the disk library points to valid path. If the mount path was configured as:
    • UNC path, make sure the target MediaAgent is able to access the UNC path.
    • Local drive, make sure to copy the <MountPath> folder (including its contents CV_MAGNETIC, folder, and so on) from the source MediaAgent to new target MediaAgent.
  7. To verify that the migration was successful, do the following.

    1. Right-click on the disk library where you want to view the properties and then click Properties.

      The new target MediaAgent name appears on the General tab.

    2. Perform backup and restore operations from the migrated disk library.

      Backup and restore operations must be successful.

Shared Disk Libraries

You can migrate a shared disk library to another MediaAgent within the CommCell.

  • To migrate a disk library, the target MediaAgent must have access to the same mount path as the source MediaAgent.
  • The user must have mount paths that are accessible to the target MediaAgent. After migration, ensure that all mount paths are online or accessible.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the <Mount Path> that you want to migrate to another MediaAgent, and then click Share Mount Path.
  3. In the Mount Path Properties dialog box, select the <Mount Path>, and then click Share.
  4. In the Share Mount Path dialog box, do the following:
    1. Select the <MediaAgent> that you want to migrate to.
    2. Click Local Path.
    3. In the Disk Device box, enter the file path where the data must be located.
    4. After you specify the local path, manually copy the content that is available in the source MediaAgent to the new (target) MediaAgent.
    5. Click OK.
  5. Click OK.

    The disk library is now associated with the selected <MediaAgent>.

  6. Make the new MediaAgent the default data path for all the storage policies that were associated with the old MediaAgent by following the steps described in Configuring Alternate Data Paths for Primary Copies

    If a single disk library, which is configured as the data path on the storage policy copy, is deconfigured prior to assigning the new disk library as the data path,  change the data path of the associated storage policy. For more information, see Change Default Data Path.

Disk Volume Reconciliation

Disk volume reconciliation allows you to reconcile the discrepancies in the disk volume associated with a storage policy copy data. This feature compares the physical data located in the disk mount path with the metadata records in the CommServe database and provides the list of orphaned jobs and orphaned media space. Orphaned jobs are jobs without corresponding data on the media, and orphaned media is the list of volumes without corresponding jobs in the CommServe.

You can review the information and delete the orphaned jobs and/or orphaned media. When an orphaned media space is deleted, the space is marked for deletion and pruned based on the retention rules set for the copy. When an orphaned job is deleted, the job is removed from the CommServe database. Jobs deleted using this feature are recorded in the Audit Trail.

  • It is applicable to disk storage media only.
  • This feature is applicable to non-deduplicated storage policy copy only.

Orphaned Jobs or Orphaned Data That Use Disk Volume Reconciliation

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Policies | Storage Policies.
  2. Right-click the appropriate non-deduplicated storage policy copy.
  3. Point to All Tasks | Disk Volume Reconciliation, and then click Collect Data From Media.
  4. Click Yes in the confirmation dialog box.
  5. The disk volume reconciliation job is performed and the details are displayed in the View Results of Disk Admin Job dialog box.
    • The Orphaned Media Space tab displays the list of data that does not have a corresponding job.

      Right-click the appropriate orphaned media and click Delete Contents. The selected data is deleted from the media.

    • The Orphaned Jobs tab displays the list of jobs without corresponding data on the media.

      Right-click the appropriate orphaned job and click Delete. The selected job is deleted from CommServe database.

  6. Click Close to exit.

Once a disk volume reconciliation job is executed, you can use the results of the analysis to reconcile the differences at a later time. This allows you to reconcile the differences without executing the job again.

View the Results of a Disk Volume Reconciliation Job and Reconcile the Differences

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Policies | Storage Policies.
  2. Right-click the appropriate non-deduplicated storage policy copy.
  3. Point to All Tasks | Disk Volume Reconciliation and then click View Results and Reconcile.
  4. Click Yes in the confirmation dialog box.
  5. The disk volume reconciliation job is performed and the details are displayed in the View Results of Disk Admin Job dialog box.
    • The Orphaned Media Space tab displays the list of data that does not have a corresponding job.

      Right-click the appropriate orphaned media and click Delete Contents. The selected data is deleted from the media.

    • The Orphaned Jobs tab displays the list of jobs without corresponding data on the media.

      Right-click the appropriate orphaned job and click Delete. The selected job is deleted from CommServe database.

  6. Click Close to exit.

You can use the Media Information Report to review the results of  this job. The details of the orphaned jobs, orphaned media, and the volumes deleted using the job are available in the report

Delete a Disk Library

You can delete a disk library from the CommCell Console or by using the Command Line Interface. For more information on deleting a disk library using command line, see Delete a library Using Command Line.

  • Data associated with a library will be lost when the library is deconfigured.
  • Make sure that the library that you want to remove is not in use. Use the Job Controller to find and kill any jobs that use the library.
  • Make sure that every storage policy copy that is associated with the library has been deleted. Determine the storage policies accessing the library as described in View the Storage Policies Accessing a Library.
  • If the mount path contains deduplicated data, retire the mount path as described in Retiring a Mount Path before deleting the disk library.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then select Delete.

    A message appears that tells you that the library's storage policy copies must be deleted in order for the library to be deleted.

  3. If no storage policy copies are associated with the library and you want to delete, click Yes.

    The disk library is removed from the Libraries.

Deconfigure a Disk Device

Deconfigure a Disk Device for Individual MediaAgent

  1. Make sure that the mount paths that use the device are deconfigured. See Deleting a Mount Path for more information.
  2. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  3. From the Select MediaAgents dialog box, do the following:
    1. From the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents.
    2. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list box, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  6. Right-click the appropriate device, and then click Deconfigure.
  7. Click Yes in the Confirm Deconfigure prompt.

    The device is deconfigured.

    After restarting all of the MediaAgents that share this disk, the disk is available for other applications.

Deconfigure a Disk Device for All MediaAgents

You can deconfigure multiple MediaAgents for a Disk Device.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.
  2. On the Select MediaAgents dialog box, do the following:
    1. From the Available MediaAgents list, select the MediaAgents.
    2. Click Add to move the MediaAgents to the Selected MediaAgents list box, and then click OK.
  3. Click OK.
  4. From the Library and Drive Configuration dialog box, click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  5. Right-click the Device, and then click Deconfigure for All Selected MediaAgents.
  6. Click Yes in the Confirm Deconfigure prompt.

The device is deconfigured with the list of selected MediaAgents.

Add Additional Mount Path

You can add additional mount path to an existing disk library from the CommCell Console or by using the Command Line Interface. For more information on adding additional mount path using command line, see Add an Additional Mount Path Using Command Line.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.
  2. Select and right-click the appropriate library, and then click Add Mount Path.
  3. In the Add Mount Path dialog box, select either Local Path or Network Path.
    • If you select Local Path, enter the file path of a mount path.
    • If you select Network Path, type the user name and password to access the network share, and then enter a file path to a mount path.
  4. Click OK.

Modify the Mount Path

You can modify the mount path of the MediaAgent from the CommCell Console or by using the Command Line Interface. For more information on modifying the mount path using command line, see Modifying the Mount Path Using Command Line.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Sharing tab.
  4. Select the appropriate controller, and then click Edit.
  5. In the Device Controller Details dialog box, do the following:
    1. Select the access type.
    2. Select the appropriate path.
      • If you select Local Path, enter the file path of a mount path.
      • If you select Network Path, type the user name and password to access the network share, and then enter a file path to a mount path.
    3. In the Edit Maximum Allowed Writers area, select the number of writers that you want to assign.

      Note: These options are available only when the Read/Write access type is selected

  6. Click OK.

View Disk Space

You can view the mount path location and information on the free space available on the mount path and the total amount of valid data. If necessary you can record pertinent information about the mount path as a description in the mount path properties.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.

    The Mount Path Properties dialog box displays the properties of the mount path.

  3. Click OK.

View or Modify the Device Properties for Disk Libraries with Static Mount Paths

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Disk Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Device Alias Name box, modify the name.
  4. Enable or disable the device by selecting or clearing the Device Enabled check box.
  5. Click OK.

Use Unbuffered I/O

To increase the speed of operations that access the mount path, you can configure the MediaAgent to bypass the Microsoft Windows file system buffering.

This is applicable for Windows MediaAgents and disks that are mounted directly (not UNC paths).

To enable unbuffered I/O on a mount path:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Mount Path Properties dialog box, on the General tab, click Use unbuffered I/O, and then click OK.

To control the number of read ahead buffers in the unbuffered I/O mode:

The read streams for deduplication jobs are not unbuffered. Therefore, this additional setting does not have an effect on deduplicated data and in completion of Auxiliary copy jobs of deduplication data sets.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | MediaAgents.
  2. Right-click the appropriate MediaAgent, and then click Properties.
  3. In the MediaAgent Properties dialog box, click the Additional Settings tab, and then click Add.
  4. In the Add Additional Settings on Windows Client dialog box, select the following:
    1. In the Name box, type dwMaxAsyncIoRequests.

      The Category and Type details fill automatically.

    2. In the Value box, specify the value for number of read ahead buffers.
  5. Click OK and click OK to close the MediaAgent Properties dialog box.

Reserve A Mount Path for Silo Restores

When data from Silo Storage is restored, the Silos are retrieved to the primary media. By default, the Silos are retrieved to the original mount path from which the data was migrated to silo storage. However, during a restore, if the original mount path does not have enough space, the Silos are automatically copied to any other mount path with sufficient space available in the library.

To ensure that a mount path with sufficient space is available in the library at all times, you can have a dedicated mount path that is reserved for Silo restore operations only. When reserved for Silo restores, the number of data writers to the mount path is set to zero and this prevents the mount path from being used for regular backup operations.

When a reserved mount path is available, then all Silo restore operations on the library are run to the mount path by default. It is recommended that the storage capacity on this mount path is equivalent to the size of an average Silo.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <library>.
  2. Right-click the mount path in the right pane, and then click Properties.
  3. Select the Reserve Space for Silo Restores check box.
  4. Click OK.

Enable or Disable a Mount Path

The mount path can be enabled or disabled, if required, to control the access to the mount path. If the mount path is disabled, it will be displayed as Offline in the General tab of the Mount Path Properties dialog box. If the mount path is disabled by the system due to inaccessibility, the offline reason can also viewed from the General tab of the Mount Path Properties dialog box. Note that when a MediaAgent itself is offline, the individual mount paths are not displayed as offline.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab of Mount Path Properties dialog box, select the Enable Mount Path check box to enable. Clear the Enable Mount Path check box to disable.
  4. Click OK.

Establish the Mount Path Allocation Policy

The mount path allocation policy allows you to establish the maximum number of concurrent writers or the maximum number of simultaneous backups on the mount path. See Establish the Mount Path Allocation Policy for the Library for a detailed description.

Use the following steps to modify the values for writers for to mount paths.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the mount path within the disk library and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Allocation Policy tab.
  3. Click either the Maximum Allowed Writers option or the Allocate number of Writers option and then select the maximum number of writers.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Repeat the procedure for all of the mount paths associated with the disk library.

    The sum of the writers that are allocated in the mount paths should be equal to the total number of mount paths that are allocated in the disk library.

If necessary, you can disable the mount path for write operation. This is useful in situations when you want to retire or phase-out a mount path. See Retiring a Mount Path for instructions.

Establish Space Allocation on the Mount Path

Space allocation allows you to establish the maximum amount of space that must be used by the mount path. This can be done by specifying the reserve space and selecting either the Use until the mount path reaches the reserved space or Do not consume more than n GB options.

  • In some situations the mount path may consume more space and exceed the specified minimum reserve space. Consider the following example:

    If you have established the minimum reserve space as 2 GB, and run a two-streamed data protection operation when the disk space is 2.01 GB, both the streams will use a minimum of 25 MB before spanning to an alternate mount path. In such a situation the free space will fall below the  specified 2 GB.

    This could also happen if two concurrent single-streamed data protection operation are initiated to the same mount path using two different storage policies.

  • Similarly, the system might consume more than the specified maximum space. Consider the following example:

    When a data protection job is initiated, the system checks for the available disk space and verifies whether it is less than the specified maximum space. For example if you have specified 5 GB as the maximum space and if you have used 4.75 GB, the data protection job will be initiated using the mount path. However, if the size of the data is .5 GB, the system will write the entire data. In such a situation the space consumed will be more than the specified maximum space.

    A data protection operation will generally write to the mount path until the minimum reserve space is reached, before spanning to an alternate path.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Allocation Policy tab.
  4. In the Space Allocation section, establish one or more of the following options:
    • Specify the minimum reserve space in the Reserve Space box.
    • Specify the maximum space that can be used by the mount path by choosing either the Use until free space on mount path reaches Reserved Space or Do not consume more than n GB options.
  5. Click OK.

Reduce Fragmentation of Data on a Mount Path

You can reduce the fragmentation of data on a mount path by enabling the Reduce fragmentation by growing the backup chunk by n MB option. This will pre-allocate the space on the mount path for a write operations resulting in reduced fragmentation which in turn will speed-up read operations (auxiliary copy, restore operations) from the disk. This option is supported only for Windows MediaAgents.

Fragmentation levels in the mount path can be analyzed using the Fragmentation Analysis feature.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Allocation Policy tab.
  4. In the Fragmentation section, click Minimize fragmentation by allocating write blocks of n MB check box and specify the size that must be pre-allocated for each write operation in the box.
  5. Click OK.

View or Modify the Properties of Disk Devices in a Shared Mount Path

You can also view and modify the following properties associated with device paths associated with shared disk devices from a mount path:

  • List of device paths and their associated MediaAgents accessing the shared device
  • The path used to access the device
  • The username used to access the device
  • The access permissions for the device
  • View or modify the maximum number of writers to the device
  • Enable or disable the MediaAgent's access to the device
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Sharing tab.
  4. Select the device path and click Edit button.
    • In the MediaAgent list, click the access type (Read or Read/Write) of your choice.

      On mount paths associated with replicated disks, you can modify the read-write access to the mount path.

    • In the Edit Maximum Allowed Writers area, you can change the maximum number of writers.

View Deduplication Databases (DDBs) Associated with a Mount Path

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Deduplication DBs tab.

    Under the DDB Name, Storage Policy/Copy, Sealed Time column, the list of all DDBs with sealed time if the DDB is sealed, storage policies, and storage policies copies that are associated with the selected mount path are displayed.

  4. Click OK.

Share a Mount Path

Use the following steps to share the existing mount path with other MediaAgent.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the mount path that you want to share with another MediaAgent, and click then Properties.
  3. Click the Sharing tab.
  4. Select the mount path and click Share.
  5. From the Share Mount Path dialog box, perform the following:
    1. Select the MediaAgent you want to share.
    2. In the Access column, select the access type.

      If access type is selected as Read, then that mount path will be used only for read operations.

      If access type is selected as Read/Write, then that mount path is used for both read and write operations.

    3. Select Network Path.
    4. Type the user name and password to access the network share.
    5. In the Folder box, enter the file path to the mount path.

      Note: To ensure that the MediaAgent is able to access the mount path, the file path should be same as the one that is being shared.

      For example:

      MediaAgent MA01 is accessing disk library, which is configured on MA01 with mount path D:/disk_library.

      To configure another MediaAgent MA02 to access the same folder location, type \\MA01\d$\disk_library in the Folder box.

    6. Click OK.
    The new MediaAgent that is shared appears under Controllers.
  6. Click OK.

    The disk library is now associated with the selected MediaAgent.

Moving Mount Paths

Following are the different ways to move mount paths:

  • For non-deduplicated data, move the contents of the entire mount path to another location.
  • Retire (phase out) or move subsequent operations to another location and allow the data in the current location to be aged by the data aging operation. See Retiring a Mount Path. for instructions.
  • For deduplicated data, you must use the workflow for moving mount paths. For more information, see Move Mount Path Workflow.
  • You can also attach the disk library to another MediaAgent by migrating a disk library. See Migrate a Disk Library for step-by-step instructions.

Use the following steps to move a mount path from one location to different location on same MediaAgent for non-deduplicated data:

  1. Copy the <MountPath> folder (including its contents CV_MAGNETIC, and so on) from the current mount path location, to a new mount path location.

    For example, if you have a disk library with a mount path in D:\DL01, ensure to copy this (DL01) folder

  2. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  3. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Sharing tab.
  5. Select the <Device Controller Details> for the appropriate mount path.
  6. Click Edit.
  7. Enter the new path where the mount path folder (content) was copied in the Device Controller Details dialog box.
    • If you select Local Path, click Browse to select a mount path, or enter a mount path.
    • If you select Network Path, type the user name and password to access the network share.
  8. Enter the file path to a mount path.
  9. Click OK.
  10. You will be prompted with a Confirm dialog box. Click Yes.
  11. The mount path is moved to the specified location.
  12. Verify that the mount path is online and accessible after the move. If the mount path is accessible, the status under Accessible columns displayed as Yes.
  13. Click OK.

    If there are any shared MediaAgents to this mount path, make sure to modify the device path to the new location for all MediaAgents that are sharing the device.

  14. Perform client backups to verify if the mount path was moved to new location

    Backup operations must be successful.

Disabling Write Operations on a Mount Path

You can disable the write operations on a mount path and prevent the mount path for being used for subsequent write operations. However, you will be able to perform read operations on the data available on the mount path.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources > Libraries > library.
  2. Right-click the mount path that you no longer want to use, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Mount Path Properties dialog box, click the Allocation Policy tab, and then click Disable mount path for new data.
  4. Click OK.

Retiring a Mount Path

When you retire a mount path, the mount path will not be used for subsequent write operations. However, you can perform restores (read operations) on the data available in the mount path.

To retire a mount path, disable the write operations on a mount path for any new data. For instructions, see Disabling Write Operations on a Mount Path.

Note:

  • Depending on the retention criteria set on the storage policy copy, the data in the mount path will be pruned when the data aging operation is run.

    When all the data in the mount path is completely pruned, the mount path can be deleted.

    Important: For storage policies with deduplication, you can delete a mount path only when all jobs associated with the DDB are pruned. This is because the jobs managed by the DDB might have data on other mount paths that still refer to unique data blocks on this mount path. Therefore, deletion of a mount path is not allowed until the DDB has no more valid jobs.

    To determine whether the mount path has valid data, see View the Contents of a Mount Path.

    To delete a mount path, see Delete a Mount Path.

View the Contents of a Mount Path

You can view the contents of a specific mount path. This feature can be used to view a list of backup operations residing in the mount path. All of the details that are associated with the backup operations that are available in the media are displayed. This includes the following:

  • The Job ID and the status associated with the backup operation
  • Names of the client, agent, instance/backup set and subclient
  • Whether the backup operation is Full, Incremental, Differential or Synthetic full
  • The archive file type
  • The day and time in which the archive file associated with the backup operation was created.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click View Contents.

    The Data on Media dialog box displays the details of jobs available in the media.

Mount Path Passwords for Shared Disk Libraries

When shared disk libraries are configured over the network, user accounts are required to access the mount paths. These accounts are defined in the device properties of the shared disk. You must associate the user accounts with the mount paths.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Library and Drive.

  2. Under Available MediaAgents, select the MediaAgents that are attached to the library and then click Add.

    Click OK.

  3. Click the Shared Disk Device tab.
  4. Locate the device, expand it, and then right-click the mount path.

    The associated account should be defined under Network Path in the Sharing Folder Properties dialog box.

You can change the passwords of the account that are used to access the mount paths.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Under the Configure section, click User Account Management.
  3. Enter the Current Credentials of the user account associated to the mount path in the User name and Password boxes.
  4. Perform the following:
    1. In the Password box, enter the new password for the user account.
    2. In the Confirm Password box, reenter the password.
    3. In the Notes box, specify the reason for the user account change.
    4. Click Preview to see all the mount paths associated with the account that will be updated.
    5. Click OK.
  5. Click OK.

Delete the Contents of a Mount Path

The delete contents option can be used to logically delete the contents of a mount path. This operation deletes the data from the CommServe database. This operation does not make the disk space in the mount path available. A Data Aging operation must be run afterwards to make the disk space available. 

This option can be used to make media available in order to complete an important data protection job when there is no free space available in the library. The Delete Contents operation is recorded in the Audit Trail.

Use Extreme caution when you use this option. Once the contents of the mount path are deleted, they are not available for data recovery operations.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.
  2. Right-click the appropriate mount path, and then click Delete Contents.

    A warning message appears.

  3. Do either of the following:
    • Click Yes in the Warning prompt to continue.
    • Click No to stop the operation.
  4. In the Enter Confirmation text dialog box, type erase and reuse media.
  5. Click OK.

Delete a Mount Path

You can delete a mount path only if it does not contain backup data. You can remove backup data by performing either one of the following:

  • Deleting all storage policy copies that point to the disk library.

    Before deleting a storage policy copy, all subclients associated with the copy must either be associated with a different storage policy copy or deleted.

  • Disabling the mount path for any new data, allowing existing data to age and then running the Data Aging operation.

You can delete a mount path from the CommCell Console or by using the Command Line Interface. For more information on a mount path using command line, see Delete a Mount Path Using Command Line.

  1. You must delete the contents of the mount path. Once data is deleted on disk mount paths, it cannot be restored.

    For instructions, see Delete the Contents of a Mount Path.

    Note: If the mount path contains deduplicated data, retire the mount path as described in Retiring a Mount Path.

  2. Right-click the mount path that you want to delete, and then click Delete Mount Path.
  3. Click Yes in the prompt that appears

    The mount path is deleted.

Creating Mount Path Label

When you upgrade the MediaAgent from any previous version, the mount paths from the previous version may not have the mount path label file that is required for the pruning of aged data.

To create the mount path label files in the local mount paths, you can do the following:

  • Use the CreateMountPathLabel tool to identify the mount paths that do not have a mount path label.
  • Create an input text file that contains the information of the mount paths that do not have a label.
  • Use the CreateMountPathLabel tool to create the missing label in the mount paths.

Note: The above procedure is not supported for network mount paths.

Before You Begin

To create an input file, you need the CommCell number. To view the CommCell number:

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Tools tab, and then click License Administration.
  2. On the Capacity tab, the CommCell number is the decimal value displayed for CommCell ID.

    For example:

    CommCell ID: 966D14

    In this example, CommCell number is 9858324.

To create an input file, you need the library ID. To view the library ID:

  1. Use the GxTail tool from the <software installation\Base> folder to retrieve the MediaManager.logs. (See GxTail - Overview for more information.)
  2. The library ID is displayed along with the library alias name.

    For example:

    [DiskLibrary334<DiskLib1>]

    In this example, the library alias name is DiskLib1 and the corresponding library ID is 334.

Procedure

  1. On the MediaAgent computer, execute the following command to get the report of mount paths that do not have a label:

    For Windows

    >cd <software installation path>\Base
    >CreateMountPathLabel.exe -report -inst <instance_ID>

    For Unix

    [root@user-xxx Base]# /opt/<software installation path>/Base/CreateMountPathLabel -report -inst <instance_ID>

    The report displays the ID and name of the mount paths that do not have a label file. A sample report is given below:

    For Windows

    MountPathLabel does not exist in the following Paths:

    42 E:\MountPath\Folder_11.30.2013_04.55\CV_MAGNETIC
    46 E:\MountPath_1\Folder_04.09.2014_12.30\CV_MAGNETIC

    For Unix

    MountPathLabel does not exist in the following Paths:

    92 /home/Maglib/Folder_11.30.2013_04.55/CV_MAGNETIC

  2. Create an input text file on the MediaAgent computer. Input contains
    • CommCell number
    • Complete file path to the mount path (only local file paths are supported)
    • Library ID
    • Mount path ID

    Enter the parameters in the same order with each parameter separated by a comma. Also, ensure that there are no spaces before or after each comma.

    For example:

    For Windows

    14325,E:\MountPath\Folder_11.30.2013_04.55\CV_MAGNETIC,344,42

    For Unix

    14325,/disk/mountpath1/CV_MAGNETIC,23,45

  3. You can add multiple inputs each separated by a new line.

    For example:

    For Windows

    14325,E:\MountPath\Folder_11.30.2013_04.55\CV_MAGNETIC,344,42
    14325,E:\MountPath_1\Folder_04.09.2014_12.30\CV_MAGNETIC,23,46

    For Unix

    14325,/disk/mountpath1/CV_MAGNETIC,23,45
    14325,/disk/mountpath2/CV_MAGNETIC,23,46

  4. Save the input file.
  5. Execute the following command:

    For Windows

    >CreateMountPathLabel.exe -if <input file location>\InputFile.txt

    For Unix

    [root@user-xxx Base]# /opt/<software installation path>/Base/CreateMountPathLabel -if /<input file location>/InputFile.txt

    A confirmation message appears. The mount path label file is created in the CV_MAGNETIC folder in the mount paths.

  6. Restart the MediaAgent services.

    Data pruning will work as expected.
