Can Evaluation and Permanent licenses co-exist?

Yes, evaluation and permanent licenses for the same license type can co-exist in the CommCell. When an agent is installed, the software first consumes any available permanent licenses before consuming evaluation licenses.

How does SnapProtect handle the SQL Enterprise License during the CommServe Installation?

Commvault Systems, Inc. has an ISV-R royalty contract with Microsoft, allowing the SnapProtect software to be bundled with a full copy of the SQL Server Enterprise Edition. CommVault Systems, Inc. reports the license usage (per country) every month to Microsoft.

How do I determine the License Types that I should purchase?

License types are dependent on the features and components you plan to use along with the selected agent.

Example

Assume that you want to back up a Exchange mailbox from one client and file system data from other five clients. You will need the following licenses:

License Type Number of Licenses
Server File System 5
Application Class 1 1
MediaAgent 1
Disk Library Connector (DDO) 1

If you also have a SQL database that you want to back up, and if you want to enable deduplication, you will need the following additional licenses:

License Type Number of Licenses
Application Class 1 1
De-Duplication Block Level 1

What if you want your backed up data encrypted? You will need the following license:

License Type Number of Licenses
Data Encryption 1

What Are The Different SnapProtect Components That Are Included In the SnapProtect license?

The SnapProtect license is all-inclusive and requires a single controller based license.

The table below summarizes the components and capabilities that are a part of the SnapProtect license:

Component/Agent type Capabilities
Management Console (CommCell Console) Coordinating operations (data protection, data recovery, and administration operations, job management, event management, etc.) within a CommCell and communicating between all media agents and clients.
MediaAgents Transmitting data between clients and backup media and managing the data stored in the media.
Tape Performing all backups to tape.
All application agents (iDataAgents) Controlling data consistency for application aware backups.
Virtualization agents Controlling all aspects of data management in virtualized environments such as data protection, archive, replication and reporting.

The table below summarizes the components and capabilities that are a part of the Data ONTAP license:

Component/Agent type Capabilities
Operations Manager / Protection Manager Ensuring efficient usage of resources in such as VM Life Cycle Management .
FlexClone Replicating data volumes and data set instantly.
SnapVault / SnapMirror Efficient solution for backup and disaster recovery.

What is a permanent license with expiration date? What is leased license?

A permanent license showing an expiration date is referred to as a leased license. The license expiration date can be seen in the License Details tab of the License Administration dialog box as well as in the License Summary Report.

When a leased license is 30 days away from the expiration date, you will receive a license expiration reminder every time you log onto the CommCell Console. Contact your software provider to request a new license.

What happens when a license expires?

When a license expires, you may encounter the problems listed in the following table. You can determine the cause of the problem by checking the error messages in the Event Viewer or the appropriate log file.

Log files are found in the <software installation path> \ Log Files folder.

Problem Solution Error Message

Data Protection Operations Do Not Run

Check the license information of the associated agent. Backup operations may not run if the license for the associated agent has expired. From the Event Viewer:

Failed to initialize backup request Invalid or No license for application type <app_type> Application name: <app_name>

From the JobManager.log file:

The application license evaluation date has expired.

MediaAgent Will Not Restart

Check the license information of the associated MediaAgent. A MediaAgent that is installed on the same computer as the CommServe may not restart if the license for the MediaAgent has expired. From the Event Viewer:

The application license evaluation date has expired Application name: <MediaAgent_name>

From the cvd.log file:

The application license evaluation date has expired.

Data Protection and Recovery Operations Cannot be performed

All backup operations will become unavailable when the CommServe license expires.

Certain backup operations will become unavailable if the evaluation license for a feature or product has expired. In this situation, you must contact your software provider to obtain the necessary permanent license for that feature or product.

What happens to a CommServe Express Version during upgrade?

In previous software releases, the CommServe Express version used "tokens" as a licensing mechanism. When you upgrade a CommServe installed with the Express Version, the tokens are converted into traditional licenses, based on the clients that you have installed. If you have purchased more tokens than you are currently using, then the remaining tokens will be divided amongst the traditional licenses based on the current consumption ratio.
