List Media for a BackupSet or Instance

This operation is run from the Browse and Restore options window in the CommCell Console.

You can list media associated with one of the following:

  • Latest data protection cycle, starting from the latest full backup. This option is selected  by default.
  • Data protection operations performed between a specified time range.
  • Specific storage policy copy, by specifying the copy precedence number.

    When you search media from a secondary copy, the listed media may not reflect the entire instance or backupset data, unless all the storage policies associated with all the subclients have been configured for secondary copies.

Use the following steps to run a list media operation:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | <Agent>
  2. Right-click a BackupSet and click All Tasks | Browse and Restore.
  1. Click List Media.
  2. From the List Media dialog box, click List Media for restore within specified time range.
  3. Click OK.

    The appropriate media is listed in the Media dialog box.

List Media Associated with Index

You can use list media option to predict media required to restore the index required for browsing data. This is useful when the index is not available in the index cache.

This option can be used when Job Summary report is being generated in the absence of index in in the index cache. The system then automatically restores the index from the appropriate media, if the index for the data is not available in the index cache.

In such situations, this option is useful to verify the following:

  • Whether the index is available in the index cache or must be restored from a media
  • Whether the index must be restored from a media, if the appropriate media is available

Use the following steps to run a list media operation:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | <Agent>
  2. Right-click a BackupSet and click All Tasks | Browse and Restore.
  1. Click List Media.
  2. From the List Media dialog box, click List Media containing index required for browse.
  3. Click OK.

List Media for Specific Files and/or Folders (List Media Precise)

This operation is also known as List Media Precise and is useful to precisely predict media in which specific files or folders reside. For example:
  • When a data protection operation spans across multiple media and you would like to know the exact media in which the files you wish to restore reside.
  • You have a specific set of files (either a random set or a specific set, such as *.doc or *.txt) that you wish to restore and would like to know the all the media in which the files reside.
  • You wish to restore a specific version of the file and would like to know the specific media in which the version resides.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | <Agent>
  2. Right-click a BackupSet and click All Tasks | Browse and Restore.
  3. Click View Content.
  4. From the browse window, expand the tree and select the file and or folders that you wish to restore and then click List Media.

    Filters are not taken into consideration when predicting media at subclient level or backupSet level restore option.

  5. In the List Media dialog box, select Immediate to immediately display the media list

    The Media dialog box will appear displaying a list of associated  media and, detailed media and data information including the total space required (on destination disk) to restore selected data.

List Media for Specific Jobs

Restore by Jobs feature provides the facility to restore data from a specific data protection operation. You can also use list media function associated with the job.

The following section describes how to perform this operation:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | <Agent>
  2. Right-click a backupSet and click All Tasks | Restore by Jobs.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the Backup Job History dialog box, right-click the job for which you wish to list media and then click Browse and Restore.
  5. In the Time Range tab of the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, click List Media.

    You can use the Latest Data to list media associated with the most recent data protection cycle.

    Or Specify Browse Time to list media associated with data protection operations up to the specified date and time range.

  6. From the List Media dialog box, click List Media for restore within specified time range.
  7. Click OK.
  8. The appropriate media is listed in the Media dialog box.

Additional Options

The following table describes the available additional options that can be configured while using List Media:

Option Description Related topics
Exclude Indexing Media You can exclude indexing media that does not contain data when performing a List Media operation. To do this, configure the skipIndexingMedia additional setting before running List Media. Use these steps to configure this additional setting:
  1. In the CommCell Browser, right-click the <CommServe>, then click Properties.
  2. Click the Additional Settings tab, then click Add.
  3. Enter skipIndexingMedia in the Name box. The Category and Type details appear.
  4. Enter 0 or 1 in Value. (Details describes these options.)
  5. Click OK.
 
Recall Media The Recall Media feature provides the facility to temporarily bring media back from an export location for a specific operation and return the media to the export location when the operation is complete. This capability is useful if you have exported media to another location with the intention of keeping the media at the export location for an established period of time, but need to bring the media back from the export location for a specific purpose (such as a data recovery operation) prior to the original return date. Refer to Recall Media for more information.
Alerts The List Media and Size operation also includes the ability to email prediction results by generating an alert (if configured) which would in turn contain the prediction results.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | <Agent>
  2. Right-click a BackupSet and click All Tasks | Browse and Restore.
  3. Click View Content.
  4. From the browse window, expand the tree and select the file and or folders that you wish to restore and then click List Media.
  5. In the List Media dialog box, select Immediate.
  1. Click Advanced and select the Alert tab.
  2. Click Add Alert.
  3. From the Add Alert Wizard dialog box, select the required threshold and notification criteria and click Next.
  4. Select the required notification types and click Next.
  5. Select the recipients and click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. Click OK.

Command Line Interface

Media for particular directory or files belonging to individual backupsets or subclients can be predicted  using the command line inputs.

Backup Job Summary Report The Backup Job Summary Report provides you with information about all of the backup jobs that are run in last 24 hours for a specific subclient. You can get information such as status, time, data size, and so on for each backup job. It is useful to run this report after performing the backup. Follow the steps given below to generate the report:
  1. On the CommCell Console menu bar, select the Reports tab.
  2. Click Summary.

    The Report Selection dialog box appears.

  3. If necessary, select Reports | Jobs | Job Summary in the left pane.
  4. On the General tab, select Data Management.
  5. Select the Computers tab.
  6. Select Subclient, and then select the Edit sub tab.
  7. Select the Selection tab.
  8. Under the Contents area select Protected Objects, and enter a value for the Limit Number of Objects to field.
  9. Click Run.

    The report appears in your default Web browser.
