Activating Private Metrics Reports

Overview

Before attempting to activate Private Metrics Reporting, review the process page, Getting Started with Metrics Reports.

Private Metrics Reporting offers a way for you to download the latest reports from Software Store and view host Metrics Reports in your own network. The Private Metrics Reporting Server must collect data from each CommServe computer in your environment. If you have multiple CommServe computers in your environment, then you must configure data collection for each CommServe computer. If you have installed the Private Metrics Reporting Server and CommServe software on the same computer, data collection is automatically configured and no further action is required.

You can activate data collection for reports on both v10 CommCell computers and v9 CommCell computers that are installed with Service Pack 9B or later. There are different procedures for v9 and v10 CommCell computers.

Activating Metrics Reports in a v10 CommCell Console

  1. On the CommCell Console ribbon, select the Home tab, and then click the Control Panel button.
  2. Click Enterprise Metrics Reporting.

The Enterprise Metrics Reporting dialog box appears.

  3. On the General tab, select CommCell Diagnostics and Usage.
  4. To collect information for the reports, select any of the following:
    • To collect information about the wellness of the CommCell, select Health Check.
    • To collect information about job success, client size, and errors, select Activity.
    • To collect information about CommCell settings, select Audit.
    • To collection information about the CommCell Environments that you host and calculate billing, select Charge Back.
  5. If the Download URL box is blank, type the download URL.

Copy the download URL from the CommCell Console on the computer that hosts the Private Metrics Reporting Server. The download URL is located in the CommCell Console in Control Panel > Enterprise Metrics Reporting > Download URL.

    For example: http://metricsserver1/downloads/sqlscripts/

Where metricsserver1 is the name of your organization's Private Metrics Reporting Server. You must include the forward slash (/) at the end of the URL, otherwise the download does not work.

  6. If the Upload URL box is blank, type the upload URL.

Copy the upload URL from the CommCell Console on the computer that hosts the Private Metrics Reporting Server. The upload URL is located in the CommCell Console in Control Panel > Enterprise Metrics Reporting > Upload URL.

    For example: http://metricsserver1/webconsole/

Where metricsserver1 is the name of your organization's Private Metrics Reporting Server. You must include the forward slash (/) at the end of the URL, otherwise the upload does not work.

  7. Click the Configuration tab.
  8. To collect information for all client groups, click All Client Groups.
  9. To specify a particular client group from which to collect information, from the Available Client Groups list, select the name of a client group, and then add it to Included Client Groups.
  10. To specify when report data is collected, click Data Collection Time, and then enter a time.
  11. To specify when data collection results are uploaded, in the Upload Frequency box, enter the number of days between uploads.

The minimum frequency is one day.

To view live, or more frequent data, use the reports you can download from Software Store. For more information, see Download Reports from Software Store.

  12. Click OK.

The reports display no data immediately after you activate data collection. You must wait up to one hour for data to be collected from the CommServe computer and then uploaded to your Private Metrics Reporting Server.

Activating Metrics Reports in a v9 CommCell Console

  1. On the CommCell Console toolbar, click the Control Panel button.
  2. Double-click Diagnostics and Usage.

The Diagnostics and Usage dialog box appears.

  3. On the General tab, select CommCell Diagnostics and Usage.
  4. To collect information about the wellness of the CommCell, select Health Check.
  5. To collect information about job success, client size, and errors, select Activity.
  6. To collect information about CommCell settings, select Audit.
  7. To specify a particular client group from which to collect information, from the Client Groups for Diagnostics list, select the name of a client group.
  8. To specify the time at which data is collected from the CommCell, in the Data Collection box, enter a time.

If the CommCell is not connected to the Internet, then you can use another client that is connected to the Internet to download scripts and upload data. Clients that are used as a download/upload client must be installed with SnapProtect 9.0 Service Pack 9B or later.

  9. Click OK to save your settings.

Configuring Upload/Download URLs and Upload Frequency in a v9 CommCell Console

By default in v9, data collection for the Cloud Services Web site is enabled. This procedure activates your Private Metrics Reporting Server, which takes priority over the Cloud Services Web site.

  1. On the CommServe computer, open Microsoft® SQL Server Management Studio.
    1. From the desktop, click Start.
    2. Click All Programs.
    3. Click the Microsoft SQL Server folder.
    4. Click SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. In the Connect to Server dialog box, enter the information to connect to the CommServe computer.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. In the Object Explorer panel, click the NetApp instance under the Databases folder.
  5. To set the download/upload URL, copy the following script into the code pane:

update GXGlobalParam set value = '1' where name = 'CommservSurveyPrivateEnabled'
update GXGlobalParam set value = '<Private Metrics Reporting Server URL>:<port>/downloads/sqlscripts/' where name = 'CommservSurveyPrivateDownloadsite'
update GXGlobalParam set value = '<Private Metrics Reporting Server URL>:<port>/webconsole/' where name = 'CommservSurveyPrivateUploadsite'

In the script, replace <Private Metrics Reporting Server URL> and <port> with the URL and port number of your Private Metrics Reporting Server.

    For example:

You must include the forward slash (/) at the end of the URL, otherwise the upload/download does not work.

  6. In the toolbar, click Execute to run the script.

Upload Data Now

This procedure is optional. When you activate data collection for the first time, data is collected within the next hour, and then uploaded to your Private Metrics Reporting Server. Once the feature is activated, data collection runs at the same time every 24 hours. Then the upload is compiled and sent to your Private Metrics Reporting Server, depending on the schedule that is configured in the upload frequency setting.
