SnapProtect – NetApp – Clustered Data ONTAP

SnapProtect supports application-aware protection of data on systems running Clustered Data ONTAP using integrated workflows for backup and recovery with snapshots, snapmirror, snapvault, and tape. Most capabilities of data ONTAP 7-Mode apply, however cascaded replication of primary to snapvault to snapmirror on a single policy is not supported.

Prerequisites

Data ONTAP Version

Support for Clustered Data ONTAP with SnapProtect is available for clustered Data ONTAP version 8.2 P3 and later, 8.3, and 9.0.

Load-sharing Snapmirror

If the Vserver root volume has the load-sharing snapmirror configured, ensure that the Vserver is configured with tunneling. This will allow the update of the snapmirror on the root volume so that NFS mount operations will complete successfully.

Configuration of Clustered Data ONTAP

LIF (Logical Interface) Configuration on Clustered Data ONTAP

SnapProtect provides you the flexibility to use either Cluster Management LIF or Storage Virtual Machine LIF for snapshots or replication backups.

Cluster Management LIF Storage Virtual Machine Management LIF
You can choose any volume from the cluster to perform backups. You can take separate backups of volumes of a particular Storage Virtual Machine.
It allows you to auto detect the existing Storage Virtual Machines from CommCell UI. In order to use Storage Virtual Machine IP for configuration, the Storage Virtual Machine should have Storage Virtual Machine Management LIF.
You need to provide NDMP credentials for the cluster during configuration. You need to provide NDMP credentials for the Storage Virtual Machines during configuration of NAS clients.

The Storage Virtual Machine LIF is the default configuration.

To configure NAS, SAN and NDMP clients using Cluster Management LIF, perform the configuration of Storage Virtual Machines on NetApp Arrays.

OnCommand Unified Manager

OnCommand Unified Manager 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3P1, 6.4P1, ND 7.0 is the base version for clustered Data ONTAP support in SnapProtect. Use the NetApp Interoperability Matrix Tool (IMT) to verify the latest support for your product configuration.

For configuration of OnCommand Unified Manager 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3P1, 6.4P1, and 7.0 in clustered Data ONTAP, refer to the NetApp documentation.

Before you configure SnapProtect for Clustered Data ONTAP, perform the following OnCommand Unified Manager configuration to create resource pools in OnCommand Unified Manager web console:

  • Create Resource Pools with OnCommand Unified Manager 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3P1, 6.4P1, and 7.0

Use the following steps to create Resource Pools to be used for the Vault/Mirror storage provisioning.

  1. From the NetApp OnCommand Unified Manager console, click Storage and select Resource Pools.
  2. Click Create.

Provide the required information requested in the wizard.

  • Create Vserver Associations with OnCommand Unified Manager 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3P1, 6.4P1, and 7.0

Use the following steps to create Vserver Associations.

  1. From the NetApp OnCommand Unified Manager console, click Storage and select Vserver Associations.
  2. Click Create.

Provide the required information requested in the wizard.

Cluster Peering

In order to perform replication between clusters in Clustered Data ONTAP, you need to create cluster peering. To create cluster peering, refer to Creating cluster peer relationships in Data ONTAP 8.2 in Clustered Data ONTAP® 8.2- Cluster and Vserver Peering Express Guide.

After cluster peering, make sure you add both the source and destination clusters in OnCommand Unified Manager 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3P1, 6.4P1, and 7.0.
