Automatic Discovery - SnapProtect for VMware

Skip this page if you do not want to use the automatic discovery feature, and continue to the next page.

The Customized Automatic Discovery feature enables you to set criteria to discover virtual machines in the vCenter and automatically add them to the subclient content. This is useful in environments where virtual machines are added, removed, or relocated on a routine basis. You can use this feature to configure a subclient for backup of all the virtual machines from a specific host, a datastore, or a datacenter etc.

For example, the following sections explain how to configure a subclient for backup of virtual machines from a specific host or a datastore.

Discover Virtual Machines from a Host

If you want to backup all the virtual machines from a specific host, configure a subclient as follows:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <vCenter Client> | Virtual Server | VMware.

Right-click the defaultBackupSet and click New Subclient.

  2. Enter the Subclient name.

  3. Click the Content tab.

    Click Add.

  4. Click the available list and select Host from the list. Enter the host name which appears in the vCenter or ip address of the host.

Otherwise, click  to open the Browse dialog box. Navigate to the required host and select the host.

    Click OK.

  5. The selected host will appear in the Contents of subclient list on the Content tab.

Click Preview to view all the virtual machines on the host. These virtual machines will get backed up when you perform the backup of the subclient.

    Click OK.

Discover Virtual Machines from a Datastore

If you want to backup all the virtual machines from a specific datastore, set the criteria as follows:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers | <vCenter Client> | Virtual Server | VMware.

Right-click the defaultBackupSet and click New Subclient.

  2. Enter the Subclient name.

  3. Click the Content tab.

    Click Add.

  4. Click the available list and select Datastore from the list. Enter the datastore name.

Otherwise, click  to open the Browse dialog box.

Select the Datastore from the available list. Navigate to the required datastore and select the host.

Click OK on the Browse dialog box.

Click OK on the Add Rule dialog box.

  5. The selected datastore will appear in the Contents of subclient list on the Content tab.

Click Preview to view all the virtual machines in the datastore. These virtual machines will get backed up when you perform the backup of the subclient.

If you add a rule to back up virtual machines from a specific datastore and one of the VMs has virtual machine disks on multiple datastores, all of the virtual machine disks are backed up. The VMX file (primary configuration file) for the VM tracks the locations of virtual machine disks.

    Click OK.
