Move a Non-Clustered CommServe to a Cluster Setup
It is recommended to move your CommServe to a cluster environment when:
- your non-clustered CommServe environment faces client and data growth.
- the need for a new hardware setup able to handle large amounts of data traffic becomes relevant.
In a cluster environment, the CommServe, MediaAgent and other clients take advantage of the reliability and fault-tolerance features provided by clusters. If an active node fails, the software will seamlessly resume from the next available active node during backup and restore operations.
It is important to complete an accurate assessment of the existing data growth as explained in the CommCell Scalability Guide. This ensures that the CommCell design aligns with the scalability requirements described in the guide when calculating backups, tape utilization and retention requirements.
About This Task
The new hardware must use the same computer name as the old CommServe computer. You can use a new IP address and host name, but you must do the following:
- Configure the host name of the old CommServe computer to point to the IP address of the new computer.
- Verify that all client computers point to the host name of the old CommServe computer, not to the IP address.
If you cannot keep the old computer name, contact Customer Support for assistance.
Before You Begin
- Perform a disaster recovery backup of your non-clustered CommServe database to obtain the database dump file. This file is needed during the database restore operation on the new cluster setup.
Disaster recovery backups should be performed at least on a day-to-day basis. This will help you secure and maintain the most up-to-date data of your CommServe. See CommServe Recovery Using Disaster Recovery Backup for more information.
- If you are using a new IP address for the new CommServe computer and the new IP address does not have a license, contact your SnapProtect Account Manager or Support for a new license.
- Install the CommServe software in a cluster environment, first on the active node, and then on the passive nodes.
