Firewall Configuration During Installation: Setting Up Connectivity to the CommServe Computer Using a Proxy

If you plan to configure a firewall environment where the client connects to the CommServe computer through a proxy, you can configure the client with the necessary firewall settings during the installation of the SnapProtect software.

Before You Begin

If you plan to perform remote installations using the CommCell Console, you must open some network ports. For more information, see Review Firewall and Network Port Requirements.

Procedure

Follow the firewall configuration steps that correspond to your installation method.

Remote Installations Using the CommCell Console

On the Firewall Configuration page of the installation wizard, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the There is Firewall between Client machine and CommServe check box and click CommServe is reachable only through proxy.
  2. From the Proxy client name list, select the client name of the SnapProtect proxy.
  3. Click Next to continue with the client installation.

Local Installations Using the Installation Package on Windows Clients

  1. On the Firewall Configuration page of the installation wizard, select the Configure firewall services check box, click CommServe is reachable only through a proxy, and then proceed to the next page.
  2. On the Client Computer Information page, complete the following steps:
    1. In the Client Name box, specify the name of the client computer.
    2. In the Host Name box, specify the fully qualified domain name or IP address of the client.
    3. Proceed to the next page.
  3. On the CommServe Information page, in the CommServe Client Name box, specify the name of the CommServe computer and proceed to the next page.
  4. On the Firewall Connection Information page, complete the following steps:
    1. In the Proxy HTTP/HTTPS tunnel port number box, specify the tunnel port on which the proxy expects connections to the CommServe computer. If the proxy is behind a port-forwarding gateway, provide the port number of the port-forwarding gateway to reach the CommServe computer.
    2. In the Proxy/Gateway hostname or IP address box, specify the host name of the proxy on which the CommServe computer can be reached. If the proxy is behind a port-forwarding gateway, provide the host name or the IP address of the port-forwarding gateway.
    3. In the Proxy client name box, specify the client name of the SnapProtect proxy.
    4. Proceed to the next page.
  5. If the client is separated from the CommServe computer by an HTTP proxy, complete the following steps on the Firewall HTTP Proxy Information page. Otherwise, skip this step.
    1. Select the Configure for HTTP proxy check box.
    2. Select one of the following options based on your network requirements:
      • If you want to manually provide the HTTP proxy details, click Explicit proxy settings.
      • If you want to use the HTTP proxy settings that are used by the current user profile, click Use HTTP proxy settings from user profile.
      • If you want to auto-detect the HTTP proxy details by checking the proxy auto-config (PAC) file using DNS or DHCP WPAD, click Autodetect proxy settings via WPAD.
    3. If you chose to manually provide the HTTP proxy details, provide the following information:
      • In the HTTP Proxy hostname or IP address box, specify the host name or IP address of the HTTP proxy.
      • In the HTTP Proxy port number box, specify the port number of the HTTP proxy.
    4. Proceed to the next page.
  6. Continue with the client installation.

Local Installations Using the Installation Package on UNIX Clients

  1. On the Configure Firewall page of the installation wizard, select Yes and click Next.

    On the next page, select CommServe is reachable only through a proxy and click Next.

  2. On the CommServe Client Name page, specify the name of the CommServe computer and click Next.
  3. On the Setting Proxy Connection to CommServe page, complete the following steps:
    1. In the Proxy hostname or IP address option, specify the host name of the proxy on which the CommServe computer can be reached. If the proxy is behind a port-forwarding gateway, provide the host name or the IP address of the port-forwarding gateway.
    2. In the Proxy short name option, specify the client name of the SnapProtect proxy.
    3. In the Proxy HTTP/HTTPS tunnel port number option, specify the tunnel port on which the proxy expects connections to the CommServe computer. If the proxy is behind a port-forwarding gateway, provide the port number of the port-forwarding gateway to reach the CommServe computer.
    4. Click Next.
  4. On the Deciding If to Configure HTTP Proxy page, if the client is separated from the CommServe computer by an HTTP proxy, select Yes, and then click Next. Otherwise, select No and continue with the client installation.

    After you accept to configure HTTP proxy, on the Setting HTTP Proxy Configuration page, complete the following steps:

    1. In the HTTP Proxy hostname or IP address option, specify the host name or IP address of the HTTP proxy.
    2. In the HTTP Proxy port number option, specify the port number of the HTTP proxy.
    3. Click Next.
  5. Continue with the client installation.
