Recovering Aged Data - Overview
If data is no longer available in the CommServe database, but it is available in the physical tapes, you can restore it using the tape catalog feature. This feature is useful in the following scenarios:
- If the backup jobs are no longer available in the CommServe database, but the actual backup data is available on a tape.
- If a storage policy, a client, a backup set or copy is deleted, but the actual backup data is available on a tape.
Note: If only the subclient is deleted, there is no need to tape catalog. The data is still restorable from the backup set.
- If the disaster recovery backup data of a CommCell is available on a tape and the CommCell is not functional, you can recover the required disaster recovery backup data and make it accessible from another CommServe.
- If the database does not contain any records of the backup jobs performed after a disaster recovery backup, due to the database that was restored being older than the backup jobs on the media and thus having no information about those jobs.
- Since aged data does not exist on disk, tape catalog feature is used to recover aged data on tapes only.
- Before attempting a tape catalog operation, try to access the aged data first, as there is a chance that the data still exists in the CommCell.
- Recovering Aged Data using Tape Catalog is a last resort. Use CommCell Migration (CCM) instead, if the Disaster Recovery backup is available.
To recover data from the tape, you will perform the general steps below for all use cases. Specific needs are covered in the Advanced cases, as needed for each use case.
- Catalog the Tapes: identifies the tapes that contain the data to import and catalog the tapes in the Catalog Media group.
- View the Catalog Content: when the tapes are catalogued, you have the chance to verify their contents.
- Merge the Contents of the Tapes: after verifying the contents you need, merge the media.
- Enable Browse and Restore for Aged Data: at this point, the CommServe database contains all the information about previously unknown backup jobs and backup jobs appear in backup history of the client.
- Restore the merged data.
If the copy already exists in the CommServe database, then the imported data will show up as aged data. If the tape catalog operation creates the copy when the data is imported from the tape, then the jobs will show up as non aged. The copies created by this operation are not usable for backups.
