Global Filters - Getting Started

Table of Contents
You can manage filters at a global level.

Notes:

  • Do not change any filters during a backup operation.
  • Changes to Global Filters are effective the next time a data protection operation is run on the subclients for the CommCell. Perform a full backup after changing Global Filters.
  • To filter Job Results files from backup operations, see Excluding the Job Results Directory from a Backup Job.

Configure Global Filters

You can set up backup exclusions at the CommCell level by defining global filters through the Control Panel. Each exclusion defines one or more items that will not be included in backups for the CommCell.

  1. From the CommCell Console ribbon, on the Home tab, click Control Panel.
  2. Under Data, click Global Filters.

The Global Filters dialog box is displayed.

  3. To apply the global filters to all subclients, select the Use Global Filters on All SubClients check box.

Subclient settings always take precedence if they conflict with global filters.

  4. Select the appropriate category (agent option) from the Global Filters Category list for the exclusions list you want to define.
  5. Use the Browse or Add button to define an exclusion:
    • To exclude files or folders, click Browse. Select the item you want to exclude and click Add.

Browsing is best when you want to select a single folder tree or specific files in the file system.

    • To exclude items using paths or patterns, click Add. Enter a complete path (including the drive letter) or a pattern in the Enter Path dialog box. You can enter multiple paths or patterns by entering each one on a new line.

Adding a path is useful when you want to enter a path or specify a pattern using wildcards.

Examples of exclusions using a path and a pattern using a wildcard:

      • C:\Windows\Temp
      • *.pdf

    • Supported wildcards vary for each agent type. Be sure to use only wildcards that work with the operating system or application for which you are creating a filter.
    • Some agent types do not provide a Browse button.

  6. Click OK to save the Global Filters settings.

Enable or Disable Global Filters on Subclients

Subclient settings always take precedence if they conflict with global filters.

To enable or disable Global Filters on a subclient:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent > backup_set.
  2. Right-click a subclient and then click Properties.
  3. In the Subclient Properties dialog box, click the Filters tab.
  4. To determines how global filters are used by the subclient, in the Include Global Filters list, select one of the following values:
    • OFF: Select this option to disable global filters for this subclient; only subclient exclusions are applied. This value overrides the Use Global Filters on All Subclients global filters setting.
    • ON: Select this option to enable global filters for this subclient; both global and subclient exclusions are applied. This value overrides the Use Global Filters on All Subclients global filters setting.
    • Use Cell Level Policy: Select this option to include global filters for this subclient only if the Use Global Filters on All Subclients option is selected in the Global Filters dialog box.
  5. Click OK to save changes.
