Client Access License - Usage Calculation

The following sections describe how the usage is calculated for each of the available CAL licenses.

Application Class Virtual

What is measured? Counts traditional backups and application aware backups that run on virtual machines protected by the Virtual Server Agent.
  • Traditional backups are counted for the following application agents: Active Directory Agent, Exchange Database Agent, Microsoft SQL Server Agent, Oracle Agent, and SharePoint Agent.
  • Application aware backups (for both traditional and IntelliSnap backups) are counted for the Exchange Database Agent, Microsoft SQL Server Agent, and Oracle Agent.

Backup jobs will not be counted against traditional or capacity licenses.

Note: If you configure any subclient in a virtual machine for backups that are not considered by the Application Class Virtual license, such as SnapProtect backups, then all backup jobs in the virtual machine will be counted against traditional or capacity licenses. These licenses take precedence over the Application Class Virtual license.

How usage increases? License usage can increase by:
  • Running traditional backups for any of the supported application agents.
  • Adding new virtual machines to the subclient content.
  • Enabling backup activity on the subclient with virtual machines as content.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by uninstalling or deconfiguring any of the supported application agents from the virtual machine.

Note: Deconfiguring an agent is also known as releasing the license from the agent.

What is excluded from measurement?
  • Applications installed on physical computers.
  • SnapProtect backups.
  • Virtual machines that are not backed up by the Virtual Server Agent.

Appliance Store Usage

What is measured? Counts the used space for all mount paths that are configured in the disk libraries of the SnapProtect Appliance.
How usage increases? License usage can increase due to the growth of data in the mount paths.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by deleting content based on the retention rules.
What is excluded from measurement? None

Archived Mailboxes

What is measured? Counts all active, uniquely named mailboxes archived by:
  • Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent
  • Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent
  • Domino Mailbox Archiver Agent
  • OnePass for Exchange Mailbox (Classic)

Note: This license requires a capacity license to calculate the archiving jobs.

How usage increases? License usage can increase by:
  • Adding new mailboxes to subclient content.
  • Enabling backup activity on the subclient with mailboxes as content.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by removing existing mailboxes from the subclient content.
What is excluded from measurement?
  • Subclients with disabled activity.
  • Subclients with no storage policy.

Content Indexed Objects

What is measured? Counts all objects that are content indexed in a Search Engine cloud. The number of objects includes the documents that are successfully content indexed and documents that were attempted but failed to content index.
How usage increases? License usage can increase due to the growth of content indexed data by a storage policy.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by pruning content indexed data based on the retention rules.
What is excluded from measurement?
  • Files that are skipped from content indexing.
  • Number of folders.

CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts

What is measured? Counts all CPU sockets on a physical Hypervisor host based on the last successful full or synthetic full backup of a virtual machine residing in the host.
How usage increases? License usage can increase by adding more Hypervisor hosts, which will also add the number of backup jobs.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by:
  • Removing Hypervisor hosts from the CommCell environment and aging the backup jobs that ran for those Hypervisor hosts.
  • Disabling activity on subclients.
What is excluded from measurement? Hypervisor host where full or synthetic full backups do not complete on any of the virtual machines residing in the host.

Deduplication Active Store Capacity

What is measured? Counts the used space of all disk library mount paths associated to deduplicated storage policies.
How usage increases? License usage can increase due to the growth of used space for one or more disk libraries associated to deduplicated storage policies.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by pruning backup jobs on one or more disk libraries associated to deduplicated storage policies.
What is excluded from measurement? Sealed deduplication databases.

End Point Users

This license counts the number of Web Console users that protect their data using the following features: laptop backups, Explorer Plug-In, Data Loss Prevention, Sync Folders, and user privacy settings.

This license does not measure the amount of backup data.

End Point Sharing Users

This license counts the number of Web Console users that use the Edge Drive solution and perform the following operations:

  • Setting up a Edge Drive folder to store the data
  • Sharing the Edge Drive folder with other users

This license does not measure the amount of backup data stored in your Edge Drive folder.

End Point E-Discovery Users

This license counts the number of Web Console users that perform the following operations with content indexed data:

  • Discovery searches (searches based on content and metadata, such as file name, location, and size)
  • Document previews

Mailbox Archive Solution

What is measured?
  • Counts all active, uniquely named mailboxes protected by the following agents:
    • Domino Mailbox Archiver Agent
    • Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent
    • Exchange Mailbox Agent
    • Exchange Mailbox Archiver Agent
    • Exchange Public Folder Agent
    • Exchange Public Folder Archiver Agent

Note: Backup jobs for Exchange Public Folder and archive jobs for Exchange Public Folder Archiver do not consume the license.

  • Counts all Google accounts whose mail and drive data were archived by Cloud Connector.

Protected Virtual Machines

What is measured? Counts all virtual machines (with unique CommCell IDs and protected by active subclients) that were successfully backed up. The license considers the last successful full or synthetic full backup.
How usage increases? License usage can increase by:
  • Adding new virtual machines to the subclient content.
  • Enabling backup activity on the subclient with virtual machines as content.
How usage decreases? License usage can decrease by removing existing virtual machines from the subclient content and by aging the backup jobs that ran for those virtual machines.
What is excluded from measurement?
  • Subclients with disabled activity.
  • Subclients with no storage policy.

Virtual Machines

What is measured? Counts all virtual machines with unique CommCell IDs and protected by active subclients.

Note: This license requires the necessary traditional licenses for Virtual Server Agent backups.
