Reinstalling the Operating System on a MediaAgent

Follow the instructions in this section to reinstall the operating system on a MediaAgent computer.

Procedure

  1. Stop all the jobs that are accessing the libraries that are configured in the MediaAgent or wait for the jobs to complete.
  2. Locate the MediaAgent and write down its storage policies and clients.
    • For the storage policies associated with the MediaAgent, complete the following steps:
      1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Storage Resources > MediaAgents.
      2. Right-click the appropriate MediaAgent, and then click Properties.
      3. Click the Associated Storage Policies tab and write down the storage policies that are listed.
    • For the clients associated with the storage policies, complete the following steps:
      1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies | Storage Policies.
      2. Right-click the appropriate storage policy, and then click Properties.
      3. Click the Associated Subclients tab and write down the clients that are listed.
  3. To disable the job activities on each client that is accessing the libraries that are configured on the MediaAgent. complete the following steps:
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers.
    2. Right-click the appropriate client, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Activity Control tab, clear the Enable Backup and Enable Restore check boxes, and then click OK.
  4. If a deduplication database (DDB) is configured in the MediaAgent, complete the following steps:
    1. From the Task Manager, make sure that the SIDB.exe and SIDB2.exe processes are not running on the MediaAgent computer.
    2. Move the DDB to an accessible location.

  5. If a disk library with a local mount path is configured in the MediaAgent, move the mount path to an accessible location.

    Alternatively, you can also copy the local mount path folder to an accessible location. For example, if the mount path is located in C:\DiskLibrary, copy the entire folder including its contents and subfolders.

  6. Stop the MediaAgent services.

    For instructions, see Stopping a Service.

  7. Uninstall the MediaAgent.

    For instructions, see Uninstall MediaAgent from Computer.

  8. Install the new operating system on the MediaAgent.
  9. Install the MediaAgent software.

    For instructions, see MediaAgent Installation.

  10. If a DDB was configured in the MediaAgent, move the DDB from the location that you moved to in step 5.

    For instructions, see Move the Deduplication Database.

  11. If a disk library was configured in the MediaAgent, move the mount path from the location that you moved to in step 6.

    For instructions, see Move Mount Path.

    Alternatively, you can also copy the local mount path folder.

  12. If a tape library was configured in the MediaAgent, then detect the devices and reconfigure the library from Expert Storage Configuration.

  13. To enable the job activities on each client that you disabled in step 3, complete the following steps:
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers.
    2. Right-click the appropriate client, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Activity Control tab, select the Enable Backup and Enable Restore check boxes, and then click OK.
  14. Perform a test restore and a backup on the client.
