Configuring Additional ScaleOut Storage Pool Blocks

By default, in a CommCell environment one ScaleOut Storage Pool block is configured. Adding additional MediaAgent nodes scales out the existing storage pool. However, you can also configure multiple user defined ScaleOut Storage Pool blocks in your CommCell environment.

Before You Begin

  • Ensure you have the Hostnames of the MediaAgent nodes that will become members of the user defined ScaleOut Storage Pool blocks.
  • Install the latest Service Pack on the CommServe. For more information see, Service Packs.
  • Change the Automatic Association to Manual Association for the Existing ScaleOut Storage Pool block from the Client Computer Group in the General tab.

Procedure

Following are the high-level processes required to configure multiple user defined ScaleOut Storage Pool block and involves the following tasks in the order listed:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computer Groups and then click New Group.

The Create New Client Group dialog box is displayed.

  2. On the General tab, in the Group Name box, type a name for the new computer group and in the Description box, type a description.

Important: Do not use (space) in the Client Group Name.

  3. Click Automatic Association to automatically add MediaAgent nodes to the client group based on the rules.
  4. Under the Rule Group, from the Match list, select Any and the select the Hostname, Contains, and type the name of the MediaAgent node.
  5. Click Add Rule Group button and repeat step 4 to add additional MediaAgent nodes.
  6. Click the Additional Settings tab and add the following 3 settings. For more information on configuring additional settings, see Adding or Modifying Additional Settings from the CommCell Console.
    • Nodes per block: By default the value is set to 3. This signifies that three MediaAgents will constitute a block.

Important: The value of this setting can only be modified before the storage pool is active. As the default value is 3, the storage pool is activated and is ready for backups when the third MediaAgent node is installed.

    • Redundancy factor: By default the value is 1. This signifies that out of the 3 MediaAgent nodes, if one goes down or is unavailable the data protection operations can still continue.
    • Storage Pool: Set the value as true. This signifies that the storage pool is active.
  7. Click Ok to create a ScaleOut Storage Pool Client Computer Group.
  8. On all the Linux servers that have to be configured with this feature, install the MediaAgent and the Storage Pool

For more information, see Installing the MediaAgent.

Important: You must configure at least 3 MediaAgent nodes to configure a Storage Pool. However, you can use the Nodes per block additional setting to change this value as per your requirement.

  9. After all the MediaAgent nodes are registered, verify the default configurations. For more information see, Verifying the Default Configurations.
  10. On the CommCell Console, by default 5% of the total disk space or 2 TB (which ever is lower) is set as the Reserve Space on the Mouth Path Properties > Allocation Policy tab

For example: If you have 100 TB of disk storage, 2 TB will be reserved.

  11. Associate the auto created storage policy with subclients and perform client backups.

For more information on how to run backups, see the documentation for the specific agent.
