Creating a Schedule Policy for Automatic Database Log Backups

Applies to: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Oracle RAC, SAP for Oracle, Notes Database traditional log backups

Create a schedule policy to automatically run a database log backup when specific criteria are met, for example, run a backup when the archive log destination fills up to a specified capacity.

Automatic backups of database log files use the data protection resources more efficiently because they only run backup jobs when there is enough data to back up. A non-automatic schedule runs the backup at the specified date and time, even if there is not enough data to back up.

Take the following into consideration when plan your log backup schedule:

  • The number of transactions that the database generates
  • The disk size for the log file destination

Note: If you use a client from a previous SnapProtect release and the client is associated to this schedule type, then the log backups are initiated based on the minimum interval (Schedule Pattern tab, Minimum Interval Between Jobs box) set for the schedule policy.

About This Task

The database threshold options are:

  • The Start back when disk at log destination is
  • The Number of Archived Logs in Destination

The Minimum Interval Between Jobs parameter ensures that the software does not frequently run the job. The software does not check the database threshold options during this interval.

The Maximum Interval Between Jobs parameter ensures that the software backs up the logs even when the database threshold options have not been met. For example, if the parameter is set to 24 hours and the software has not run an automatic log backup in that time, the software will start a backup without checking the database options.

If you assign this schedule policy type to a subclient that has no backups prior to the assignment, the first backup runs irrespective of the database threshold options.

Use the information in the table to determine the parameter values.

Agent Notes
Microsoft SQL Server
  • Set a low minimum interval. For example, set a minimum interval of 10 minutes.
  • Set a maximum interval that is less than the time interval between running two backups.
  • Set an optimal log percent between 50% to 75%.
  • Sync interval is not a valid parameter for SQL Server Agent.
Oracle Best Practice: Back up the logs before the archive log destination fills up to 80% of the space (Backup Task Options dialog box, Schedule Pattern tab, Start backup when disk at log destination is box).
Oracle RAC Best Practice: Back up the logs before the archive log destination fills up to 80% of the space (Backup Task Options dialog box, Schedule Pattern tab, Start backup when disk at log destination is box).
SAP for Oracle If you use automatic schedules for log backups, they run as full backups.

Best Practice: Back up the logs before the archive log destination fills up to 80% of the space (Backup Task Options dialog box, Schedule Pattern tab, Start backup when disk at log destination is box).

Notes Database The Maximum Interval between Jobs option must be more than 15 minutes.

You can also configure a schedule when you perform a backup on a subclient. For information on how to configure a schedule, see Creating an Automatic Schedule for Database Log Backups.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, go to Policies > Schedule Policies.
  2. From the Schedule Policies pane on the right, right-click the schedule_policy and click New Schedule Policy.

The New Schedule Policy dialog box is displayed.

  3. In the Name box, enter a unique name for the schedule policy.
  4. In the Type list, select Data Protection.
  5. Select the database agent from the Agent Type list (for example, Oracle).
  6. Click Add.
  7. In the Backup Task Options dialog box, do the following:
    1. Select Automatic.
    2. On the Backup Options tab, click Databases.
    3. In the Minimum Interval Between Jobs box, enter the minimum time to start the job.

Note: If this value is met, the job starts regardless of whether the database criteria are met.

    4. In the Maximum Interval Between Jobs box, enter the maximum time to start the job.

Note: If this value is met, the job starts regardless of whether the database criteria are met.

    5. Select the criteria to use to run backup jobs:
      Database Option
      Oracle

      Oracle RAC

      SAP for Oracle

      Notes

To run backup jobs when the number of log files on the disk use a specified amount of the storage space, select the Start backup when disk at log destination is option.

To run backup jobs when the number of log files on the disk reach a specified number, select the Number of Archived Logs in Destination option.

SQL To run backup jobs when the number of log files on the disk use a specified amount of the storage space, select the Start backup when disk at log destination is option.
    6. Click OK to close the Backup Task Options dialog box.
  8. Click OK.
