Restoring a Mailbox

Browse a backupset and restore a mailbox.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup set, and then select a mailbox in the left pane of the Client Browse window.
  5. Click Recover All Selected.
  6. Select To Mailbox.
  7. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  8. Click OK.

Restoring a Message or a Mailbox Item

Browse a backupset and restore a message or a mailbox item, such as a folder, a contact, a calendar entry.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  5. Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
  6. Click Recover All Selected.
  7. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  8. Select To Mailbox.
  9. Click OK.

Restoring Messages with an Attachment

Browse a backupset and restore an attachment of a message.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  5. In the right pane, select the message that contains the required attachment.

    For all the messages that have attachments, a paper clip icon appears in the list of messages.

  6. Click Recover All Selected.
  7. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  8. Select To Mailbox.
  9. Click OK.

Performing an Out-of-Place Restore

By default, the Exchange Mailbox (Classic) Agent restores data to the client computer from which it originated; this is referred to as an in-place restore. You can also restore the data to another client computer or another folder on the same client. 

When you perform an out-of-place restore, the restored data inherits the rights (that is, permissions) of the parent directory.

Restoring to a Different Folder on the Same Client

Restore data to a different folder on the same client from which data is backed up.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  5. Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
  6. Click Recover All Selected.

    The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  7. Select To Mailbox.
  8. Clear the Restore to Same Folder check box.
  9. Enter the path to the destination folder.
  10. Click OK.

Restoring to a Different Client

When you restore data to a different client, the source and destination clients must reside in the same CommCell Console. The destination client must have the agent installed on it.
  • If a mailbox is selected as the out-of-place destination, all the selected messages are restored to the Inbox of that specific mailbox.
  • If a folder is selected as the out-of-place destination, all the selected messages are restored to that specific folder in the mailbox.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  5. Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
  6. Click Recover All Selected.

    The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  7. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  8. Select To Mailbox.
  9. Click OK.

Restoring an Archive Mailbox

Browse a backup set and restore an archive mailbox.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  5. Click Recover All Selected.
  6. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  7. Select To Mailbox.
  8. Click OK.

Restoring to a PST File

You can restore a mailbox, a message, or a mailbox item to a PST file.

The size of the PST file is limited based on the version of Outlook that you use. For Outlook 2007, the PST cannot be larger than 15 GB. For Outlook 2010 and 2013, the PST file cannot be larger than 30 GB. If you try to restore a data set that is larger than the PST size limit, the restore will fail. You can choose to restore large data sets to multiple PST files that are less than or equal to the value that you define. These PST files cannot be larger than 45 GB.

When you browse protected messages, the file size represents the size of the mailbox, folder, or messages. If you restore messages as a PST file, the size of the PST file might be different than the browse size of the messages. Messages stored in a PST file usually take up more space than messages restored as data.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. In the left pane of the Client Browse window, expand to a mailbox, message, or mailbox item, and then click Recover All Selected.

    The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  5. Select To PST File.
  6. Type the path to the location where you want to restore the PST file, including the PST file name with the .pst extension.

    If you want to restore the PST file to a network location, type the UNC path to the location, including the PST file name with the .pst extension.

  7. If you want to restore a large data set to multiple PST files, select the Limit PST size to (GB) check box, and then enter a size value.

    The size limit cannot be greater than 45 GB.

  8. If you want to create a single PST file that is common to all users or a separate PST file for each individual user, select the appropriate option in the PST Restore Options section.
    • To create a single PST file, select Create Common PST for all users, and then select either a merged folder hierarchy for all users or a preserved folder hierarchy for each user.
    • To create separate PST files, select Create separate PSTs per user, and then select the appropriate folder naming convention from the corresponding list.
  9. Click OK.

Restoring Messages from Deleted Mailboxes or Folders

Restore messages from deleted mailboxes or folders.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Advanced Options tab.
  4. Select the Show Deleted Items check box.
  5. Click View Content.
  6. Expand the backup_set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  7. Select a message or a mailbox item from the right pane.
  8. Click Recover All Selected.
  9. In the Destination Client list, select the name of client computer.
  10. Select To Mailbox.
  11. Click OK.

Reviewing Data Selected for Restore

When you select multiple mailboxes, messages and mailbox items from multiple locations, you can review all the data and locations before starting the restore.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Select a mailbox, a message, or a mailbox item from the Client window.
  5. Click Recover All Selected.
  6. In the Destination client list, select the client. The source and destination clients must reside in the same CommCell Console.

    The destination client must have the Exchange Mailbox (Classic) Agent installed on it.

  7. Select To Mailbox.
  8. If you want to restore to a different folder, clear the Restore to Same Folder check box and specify the destination path.
  9. Click Advanced.
  10. Select the Selected Paths/Filters tab.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click OK to start the restore.

Restoring by Jobs

Select a specific backup job to be restored. This method of restoring data is considerably faster because it reads continuously on the tape and retrieves the data, but does not depend on the indexing subsystem to get the seek offsets on the media.

This can be used to restore point-in-time data that is associated with a specific backup job, such as full, incremental, differential, and so on.

  • Run a restore by jobs whenever you want to restore the entire contents of the job.
  • Do not modify the contents of any associated subclient since this might of older data to be retrieved.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the entity that you want to browse, and then click View > Backup History.
  2. In the Backup History Filter dialog box, select the appropriate filter options that you want to apply, and then click OK.
  3. In the Backup Job History window, right-click the backup job that you want to restore, and then click Browse and Restore.
  4. Click View Content.
  5. From the Client window, select the content to be restored, and then click Recover All Selected.
  6. Select the appropriate restore options.
  7. Click OK.

Recover Messages Across Subclients

You can browse and recover data spanning across multiple subclients. Browsing and recovering data across subclients within a backup set allows you to recover data from the mailboxes that have been moved from one subclient to another.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Select Time Range and select Absolute Time.
  4. Select the Time Zone, and enter the Start Date time and the End Date time.
  5. Click View Content.
  6. Expand the backup set > mailbox > folder in the left pane of the Client window.
  7. Click Recover All Selected.
  8. On the General tab, specify the appropriate destination.
  9. Click the Job Initiation tab.
  10. Select Immediate to run the job immediately.
  11. Click OK.

    This will restore the data in the specified destination.

Scheduling a Restore

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

    The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.
  4. Select one or more mailboxes in the left pane.

    The mailbox items (for example, calendars, journals, and so on) are selected in the right pane.

  5. Click Recover All Selected.
  6. Click the Job Initiation tab, and then select Schedule.
  7. Click Configure.
  8. Select the appropriate scheduling options.  For example:
    1. Click Weekly.
    2. Select the days that you want the run the restore job.
    3. Change the Start Time to 9:00 PM.
    4. Click OK.

Managing Restore Jobs

After you initiate the restore operation, a restore job is generated in the Job Controller. Jobs can be managed in a number of ways. The following sections provide information on the different job management options available:

Restarting Jobs

Jobs that fail to complete successfully are automatically restarted based on the job restartability configuration set in the Control Panel.

Changes made to this configuration will affect all jobs in the entire CommCell.

To configure the job restartability for a specific job, you can modify the retry settings for that job. This will override the setting in the Control Panel. It is also possible to override the default CommServe configuration for individual jobs by configuring retry settings when initiating the job. This configuration, however, will apply only to the specific job.

Backup jobs for this Agent are resumed from the point-of-failure.

Configure Job Restartability at the CommServe Level

  1. From the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Under Data, click Job Management.

    The Job Management dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Job Restarts tab.
  4. From the Job Type list, select the appropriate item.
  5. Select the Restartable check box to make the job restartable.
  6. In the Max Restarts box, change the maximum number of times the Job Manager will try to restart a job.
  7. In the Restart Interval (Mins) box, change the time interval between attempts for the Job Manager to restart the job.
  8. Click OK.

Configure Job Restartability for an Individual Job

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent > backup_set.
  2. Right-click the subclient, and then click Backup.

    The Backup Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click Advanced.

    The Advanced Backup Options dialog box appears.

  4. Click the Job Retry tab
  5. Select the Enable Total Running Time check box, and then specify the maximum elapsed time before a job can be restarted or killed
  6. Select the Kill Running Jobs When Total Running Time Expires check box to kill the job after reaching the maximum elapsed time.
  7. Select the Enable Number Of Retries check box, and then specify the number of retries.
  8. Click OK.

Controlling Jobs

The following controls are available for running jobs in the Job Controller window:

Suspend

Temporarily stops a job. A suspended job is not terminated; it can be restarted at a later time.

Resume

Resumes a job and returns the status to Waiting, Pending, Queued, or Running. The status depends on the availability of resources, the state of the Operation Windows, or the Activity Control setting.

Kill

Terminates a job.

Suspending a Job

  1. From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Suspend.
  2. The job status may change to Suspend Pending for a few moments while the operation completes. The job status then changes to Suspended.

Resuming a Job

  1. From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Resume.
  2. As the Job Manager attempts to restart the job, the job status changes to Waiting, Pending, or Running.

Killing a Job

  1. From the Job Controller of the CommCell Console, right-click the job and select Kill.
  2. Click Yes when the confirmation prompt appears if you are sure you want to kill the job. The job status may change to Kill Pending for a few moments while the operation completes. Once completed, the job status will change to Killed and it will be removed from the Job Controller window after five minutes.

Additional Restore Options

Several additional options are available to further refine your restore operations. The following table describes these options, as well as the steps to implement them.

Skip Errors and Continue You can continue the restore job regardless of media errors and create a file that lists the full path names of the files that were not restored.
  1. From the CommCell Browser, click Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set that contains the data you want to restore, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
  3. In the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, click View Content.
  4. On the Client tab, select the data to be restored, and then click Recover all Selected.
  5. In the Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box, click Advanced.
  6. In the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, on the General tab, select the Skip errors and continue check box.
  7. Click OK.
 
Startup Options The Startup Options are used by the Job Manager to set priority for resource allocation. This is useful to give higher priority to certain jobs. Refer to Job Priorities and Priority Precedence - Advanced.
Copy Precedence By default, the system retrieves data from the storage policy copy with the lowest copy precedence. If the data was pruned from the primary copy, the system automatically retrieves data from the other copies of the storage policy in the lowest copy precedence to highest copy precedence order. Once the data is found, it is  retrieved, and no further copies are checked.

You can retrieve data from a specific storage policy copy (Synchronous Copy or Selective Copy). If data does not exist in the specified copy, the data retrieve operation fails even if the data exists in another copy of the same storage policy.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, click Client Computers > client > agent.
  2. Right-click the backup_set that contains the data you want to restore, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
  3. In the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, click View Content.
  4. On the Client tab, select the data to be restored, and then click Recover all Selected.
  5. In the Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box, click Advanced.
  6. In the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, click the Copy Precedence tab.
  7. Select the Restore from copy precedence check box.
  8. Enter the copy precedence number.
  9. Click OK.

Data Path Options The data recovery operations use a default Library, MediaAgent, Drive Pool, and Drive as the Data Path. You can use this option to change the data path if the default data path is not available. Refer to Change Data Path.
Encryption If the client's data is encrypted with a pass phrase, you must enter the pass-phrase to start the data recovery operation. Refer to Data Encryption.
Command Line Restores You to perform backups or restore from the command line. The commands can be run from the command line or can be integrated into scripts.

You can also generate command line scripts for specific operations from the CommCell Browser using the Save As Script option.

CommCell Readiness Report The CommCell Readiness Report provides you with vital information such as connectivity and readiness of the Client, MediaAgent, and CommServe. It is useful to run this report before you perform a backup or a recovery operation. Refer to CommCell Readiness Report.
Restore Job Summary Report The Restore Job Summary Report provides you with information about all the data recovery jobs that are run in last 24 hours for a specific client and agent. You can get information such as failure reason, failed objects, job options, and so on. It is useful to run this report after you perform the restore. Refer to Restore Job Summary Report.
