License Requirements for Virtual Server Agent with VMware

By default, the agent is installed using an Evaluation license. Once the evaluation period is complete, you need to obtain a permanent license from your Software Provider.

You can choose to use one of the following licensing mechanisms:

  • Traditional License, based upon products and features in your CommCell.
  • Capacity License, based on the amount of data you want to protect.
  • Client Access License, based on the number of virtual machines or CPU sockets.

For comprehensive information on licensing, see License Administration.

Traditional License

The following license types are required for the VMware Virtual Server Agent. You need to obtain the appropriate licenses based on your environment.

Agent or Component License Type
Virtual Server Agent Virtual Server

Depending on your environment, you might need to obtain licenses for the following features:

For VM Lifecycle Management

Feature License Type License Consumption
Search Console Compliance Search 1 license per CommCell

For Virtualize Me (Windows)

Feature License Type License Consumption
1-Touch for Windows 1-Touch Server for MS Windows 1 license per CommCell

Capacity License

If you plan to use capacity licenses, you must obtain the following license:

License Type License Consumption
Backup 1 license per CommCell for n Terabytes (TB) of protected data

For VM Archiving, you must obtain the following license:

License Type License Consumption
Archive 1 license per CommCell for n Terabytes (TB) of protected data

Client Access Licenses

The following licenses are available for virtual machines:

License Type License Consumption
Virtual Machines 1 license per protected virtual machine
Protected Virtual Machines 1 license per protected virtual machine
CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts 1 license per CommCell for n number of sockets
Application Class Virtual 1 license per protected virtual machine

Notes:

  • The Virtual Machines license is used with traditional agent-based licenses.
  • The Protected Virtual Machines and CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts licenses provide alternative methods of virtual machine licensing. If you apply either of these licenses on a CommCell environment monitored by capacity licenses, Virtual Server Agent jobs will not count towards capacity, causing the capacity usage to decrease.
  • For information on the license usage calculation, see Client Access License - Usage Calculation.
